Visitation will be held at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Friday from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and on Saturday at the church one hour prior to the funeral service. Bonny Lou, daughter of Reinhard H. and Fredereika “Recca” (Klick) Kunkel was born on August 10, 1927 at Devils Lake. She grew up in Southam, ND attending Southam School and graduating from Devils Lake High School in 1945. After graduating, Bonny began managing her Aunt Lucille’s café, “Brown’s Café” in Edmore. She attended a dance in Adams, ND and this is where she met her beloved Edwin Hoime and they were united in marriage on June 10, 1945 at Southam. They were the proud parents of four children, Dixie Lee, Vicki Lynn, Bryce Wayne and Lori Dee. They lived in an apartment in Edmore for a year while farming with Edwin’s brothers Elmer and Melford. Then they moved to the Burke farm in the fall of 1947 sharing a home with Elmer and his wife Ida. In 1948 they rented a farm near Inkster, ND for 3 farm seasons. When the farm was sold, they moved to the Thompson farm southwest of Edmore. They had developed a herd of cattle in Inkster that continued to grow and again they joined forces with Elmer and Ida. In 1957, Edwin and Bonny bought land 2 miles west of Edmore and moved the family to the Henry Homme Farm. They purchased more land from the Thompson Brothers in 1968. In addition to the demanding duties as a farm wife and mother of four, Bonny was the head cook at the Edmore Public School from 1967 to 1987. After retiring, they moved to Devils Lake. Edwin died on October 3, 1990. On May 10, 1991, Bonny married Laurence Dykhoff at Minot, ND where they established their home. They felt blessed to have many years together as a combined family enjoying family get-togethers and pursuing their hobbies and interests. In October of 2002, they moved to Devils Lake to be closer to family. Laurence died on March 25, 2005. Bonny continued to make Devils Lake her home until April of 2011 when she moved to the Edmore Rest Home. Bonny’s life was a busy one, but she was always very active in Concordia Lutheran Church, serving as Treasurer for many years. She also enjoyed membership in the Shamrock Homemakers Club, American Legion Auxiliary and VFW Auxiliary. Bonny was well known for her many collectables, including Cherished Teddies, Tea Cups, China Dolls, Precious Moments to name a few. She was a talented seamstress and sewed many doll clothes for her children and grandchildren. She was an excellent cook and baker and memories of homemade buns and lefse bring a smile to many faces. On the farm, she always tended a large garden and of course the canning and processing of the produce were always a fall project. She enjoyed the art and craft of painting plates and many dear friends, neighbors and family members were the lucky recipients of this gift. Bonny never turned down a chance to play BINGO or Rummy and when the nights got long she enjoyed playing Solitaire. We have so many treasured memories of our dear mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and aunt and we will hold them in our hearts forever. Bonny Lou is survived by her children Dixie (Larry) McGillis of Portland, ND, Vicki (Donald) Logan, Devils Lake, Bryce (Kristy) Hoime, Edmore and Lori (Kerwin) Pankratz, Grand Forks, ND; grandchildren Shelley (Joe) Kotaska, EGF, MN, Corey (Tracy) McGillis, Mayville, ND, Tiffany (Shane) Sipma, Woodbury, MN, Chad (Amber) Perdue, Wahpeton, ND, Travis Perdue, Fargo, ND, Kelsey (Jacob) Shepley, Evan Pankratz, both Grand Forks, Brandon (Leah) Hoime, Devils Lake and Katie Hoime, Grand Forks; great grandchildren Madison Kotaska, Reagan, Walker and Sawyer McGillis and Ava Hoime; brother Dr. Richard Kunkel, Devils Lake; Laurence’s children Robert (Kathy) Dykhoff, Eagan, MN, Richard (Linda) Dykhoff, Blaine, MN, Leslie (Bill) Mowbray, William “Bill” (Marla) Dykhoff and Tracy (Jim Krause) Miller all of Minot and Joni (Jeff) Domino, Auburn, NE; several nieces, nephews and their families.
