Christine E. Alex, “Pte Duta Win” (Red Buffalo Woman), 92, entered the Spirit World at Mercy Hospital in Devils Lake, ND on Saturday, December 13, 2014. A combined Christian and Traditional Service will be held at Cankdeska Cikana Community College, Fort Totten, ND beginning at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 17, 2014 with Father Charles Leute OP and Leon Reddog, Sr. officiating. The procession to Fort Totten will start at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday from the former WalMart in Devils Lake. The Prayer Service on Wednesday will be at 7:00 p.m. and the funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday. Christine leaves her loving family of six children: Danielle (Willis) Herald, Luwonna Cavanaugh, Jeanne (Leon) Reddog Sr., Daniel Cavanaugh, Donna (Andrew) Morin and Marty (Georgia) Alex; one sister Mrs. Lorraine Greybear; two Hunka daughters Mona Graybear of Eagle Butte, SD and Cindy Lindquist of Devils Lake; one Hunka son Laidman (Becca) Fox Jr. of Rocky Boy, MT all of whom she loved dearly and considered them her own. Christine also leaves 30 grandchildren; 109 great grandchildren; 32 great great grandchildren. Christine was born and raised in Crowhill District, later moving and residing in Fort Totten District of the Spirit Lake Nation. She worked for a time at Mercy Hospital as a CNA. She also worked at Brunswick (now known as SMC) as a Security Guard. She taught the Dakota Language for many years at Tate Topa Tribal School and served on the Dakota Language Certification Board for the Spirit Lake Tribe. Christine had many talents some of which included riding in rodeos (in her younger years) with her two brothers, Boke and Herbie Thomas. She loved to Pow-Wow and was a Champion Traditional Dancer. She always took a lot of pride in her dancing skills. She loved to sew, tan hides, pick berries, dig tipsina (wild turnips) and also prepare wildlife as often as she could when it was available. She designed and made many Star Quilts, did her own beadwork and quillwork for her many beautiful dancing outfits. Christine joins in the Spirit World her parents Michael and Rosalie (Littlewind) Thomas; sons Paul Yankton Jr. and James Michael Alex; daughter Marian Rose Alex; Hunka son Curtis YoungBear; grandchildren Leland Azure, Michael Mark Shaw and Danielle Faye Littlewind; brothers Richard “Boke” Thomas, Herbert Thomas and Arthur Thomas; sisters Laura Thomas and Lillian Mudgett. Active Pallbearers will be J.R. Fox, Greg Holy Bull, Daryl Three Irons Sr., Joseph Lawrence Sr., Duane Jackson Sr., Philip “Skip” Longie Sr. Honorary Bearers are JoAnn Smith, Sylvia Brownshield, Corrine Chaske, Judi Ami, Hermenia McKay, Clarice Lawrence, Pauline Myrick, Shirley McCloud, Juanita Giron-Vargas, Viola “Cooky” Delorme, Catherine Howard, Mona Chaske and Stella Cavanaugh.
