DuWaine L. Nelson, 79 of Devils Lake, ND passed away on Thursday evening, January 15, 2015 at the Good Samaritan Center, Devils Lake, ND.
Funeral Services for DuWaine will be held on Thursday, January 22, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake, ND with burial in the Devils Lake Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at the Gilbertson Funeral Home on Wednesday, January 21st from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. and on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until time of service.
DuWaine Leroy, son of Alfred and Alma (Olson) Nelson was born on September 13, 1935 at Barron, Wisconsin. He moved to Devils Lake with his family as a young boy and was reared and educated here.
Before enlisting in the United States Army, DuWaine worked as a bell hop at the Great Northern Hotel. He servedin the Army from November 3, 1953 to October 22, 1956 during the Korean Conflict. After his discharge he moved to Glasgow, Montana where he met and married his beloved Maybelle Elaine DePriest on June 24, 1962. They made Glasgow their home for several years, then moved to Minot, ND.
During the Vietnam War, DuWaine again served his country and on January 29, 1969, DuWaine enlisted in the United State Navy and worked with Naval Operations stateside and was honorably discharged on October 23, 1970 at Quonset Point, Rhode Island. Eventually the family moved to Minnewaukan, ND and DuWaine served as the Deputy Sheriff for a time, but most of his career was as an over the road truck driver for Harvest States. He retired in 1995 due to health problems.
When DuWaine had some free time, he was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing. He was a “cheese head” Green Bay Packers fan his entire life. DuWaine was that gentle giant of a man, who served his country, was a devoted husband, father and grandfather to his own, but was “Papa” to many others because of his kind and gentle ways.
DuWaine is survived by his children Dale Nelson and Lori and her husband Nathan Mosser all of Devils Lake and Alice Nelson of Cando, ND; grandsons Aaron Armentrout and Devin Dugdale and granddaughter Hailey Nelson; sister Roseann (LeRoy) Johnson, Glasgow, MT; nephew James (Kim) Berdahl of Towner, ND and other dear nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Maybelle on September 4, 1998 and sister Alice Mickelson.
