Robert L. “Bob” Weed, 85 of rural Devils Lake, ND passed away peacefully early Monday, February 09, 2015 at his home in the loving care of his family and with special thanks to Altru Hospice and Lois Weed for their care and support. Funeral Services for Bob will be held on Thursday, February 12, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Devils Lake with Rev. Jeff Nicla officiating. Burial will be in the Devils Lake Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Wednesday, February 11th from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a Time of Remembrance and Prayer at 7:00 p.m. Visitation on Thursday will be at the church one hour prior to the funeral service. Robert was born on September 18, 1929 at Devils Lake, ND the son of Julius and Esther (Kenner) Weed. He attended Bay School #1 through the 8th grade and graduated from Devils Lake Central High School in 1947. While in high school, Bob was active in football and also FFA (Future Farmers of America). He served as the FFA State President and also was the honored recipient of the American Farmer Degree. He was also active in 4-H as a member and later as leader of the Poplar Grove Boys 4-H Club. Bob was united in marriage to Helen Soma in 1949 and they had most recently celebrated 65 years of love and marriage. They lived their entire married life in the Devils Lake area. In addition to his life-long passion as a farmer and rancher, he and Helen also built the K.O.A. Campground west of Devils Lake in the early 1970’s and also owned and operated Lake Supply Company for 25 years. From a very early age, Bob had a keen interest in machinery. He wanted to know how they worked, why they worked and when they didn’t work he wanted to be able to fix them. He marveled at the changes that machinery played in the life of farmers. He hosted a threshing bee for many years at the family farm and demonstrating the evolution of the grain harvest over many years. Bob was always very active in the community and his church. He was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church where he taught Sunday School and served on the Church Council. He enjoyed membership in the Odd Fellows and the Lion’s Club. He was the Creel Township Supervisor and served on the Lake Region Grain Elevator Board for many years, and was the President of the Board when the new grain terminal was built. His hard work and dedication to the community and farming brought him to receive the Unsung Hero Award. In 2012 he received the Outstanding Agriculturalist Award from NDSU, an award usually reserved for graduates of NDSU, but very appreciated by Bob. Bob is survived by his wife, Helen; daughter Brenda (Michael) Gant, Dickenson, ND; sons Ronald (Ellen) Weed, Ivins, Utah and Larry Weed, Devils Lake; grandchildren Ronald (Shelly) Weed, Doreen Weed, Valarie Engler, Anterious (Felice) Gant, Demetrius Gant and Dakota (Tristae) Gant; 14 great grandchildren and 6 great great grandchildren; sister Lois (Orville) Hesch; brother-in-law Brad Omick; special friends Brenden and Jen Laugsand and Myron and Paulette Bosch and many nieces, nephews and their families. Bob was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter Shonea Gant; great granddaughter Nevaeh Gant; sister Joan Omick. Casketbearers for Bob will be Myron Bosch, Dan Weed, Monte Weed, Jeff Kenner, Brenden Laugsand and Bill Hodous. Music will be provided by Tom Wade and Lynda Pearson.
