Shirley Eileen Liudahl

Shirley Eileen (Westby) Liudahl of Devils Lake, ND, passed away Wednesday, March 4, 2015 at the Heartland Care Center where she had resided for the past five years after a stroke in 2009 affected her memory. Shirley was born December 19, 1921 to Bennie and Blanche (Savold) Westby in Maddock where she was raised. She married Albert Nelius Liudahl, August 25, 1940. They were married for 62 years before Albert passed away in 2003. They raised five children, Timothy (Macomb, IL); Sandra/Dean Johnson (Leeds, ND), Cynthia/James Crane (Summerville, SC), Jeanne Lavanger (Orange Beach, AL), and Kenneth (St. Augustine Beach, FL). While raising her family Shirley spent many hours at the sewing machine making beautiful clothes and skating costumes for her daughters, cooking wonderful meals, baking delicious treats, gardening vegetables and tending to flower gardens. The house was kept spotless, because there was a place for everything, and everything was in its place. Once her children were in school, Shirley managed Fashion City; she then worked for many years at North Dakota Telephone Company. After retiring she worked part-time at S&L and Stevensons. Prior to her stroke she remained active with the St. Olaf Lutheran Church quilting guild and ladies circle. Her hands were always busy crocheting and knitting afghans for the family and sweaters for great-grand babies; she even donated sweaters for babies through Lutheran World Relief. She enjoyed solving the word Jumble, reading, and watching Wheel of Fortune and the daily news. Shirley is survived by her children, grandchildren, Darcy/Tim VanderMeersch (Knoxville, TN), Lane/Laura Liudahl (Holmen, WI), Kirsten/Tim Morris (Chicago, IL), Wendy/Sean Oscarson (Fargo, ND), Ivy/Scott Deutsch (Horace, ND), Christopher/Alison Crane (Charleston, SC), and Alexa/Casey Tomich (Maple Valley, WA), great-grandchildren Quinn, Courtney and Haley VanderMeersch, Connor and Aiden Liudahl, Asheton Morris, Laramie and Larissa Johnson and Kase Oscarson, Cadence and Braxton Deutsch, Bailey and Porter Crane, Lauren and Julia Tomich, sister, Norma Lorraine Westby (San Clemente, CA), brother-in-law, Bob Hunter (Maddock, ND); uncle Urban Wollitz (Grafton, ND) and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a grandson, a sister, and four brothers. A memorial service is scheduled for April 10, 2015 at 11:00AM at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Devils Lake.
