MORGAN F. WALFORD

Morgan F. Walford, 97 of Devils Lake, ND passed away on Saturday, June 6, 2015 at Mercy Hospital, Devils Lake. Morgan Francis Walford was born on August 8, 1917 to Frank and Kate (DeBoer) Walford at Poplar Grove, Ramsey County in a log cabin. Morgan married Hazel Halvorson on March 13, 1943 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Morgan served in the United States Army during World War II as a Staff Sergeant from 1942 to 1945. He was discharged after being wounded in the Hurtgen Forest, on the Belgium/German Border just before the Battle of the Bulge. Morgan farmed and ranched in the Devils Lake/Fort Totten area until his retirement in 1982. Morgan and Hazel wintered in Arizona for 12 years. He was a St. Olaf Lutheran Church member for many years. Morgan was actively involved in the community. He served as Director of the Farmers Union Elevator Board, was on the church council, chairman of the Fort Totten School Board and also belonged to the following; Elks Lodge, Lions Club, IOOF, Sons of Norway, Farmers Union and the VFW. Morgan will be greatly missed. Morgan is survived by his daughters Kathryn (James) Cowan, Bandon, OR and Linda (Jayson) Dale, Snohomish, WA and his son Donald (Sandra) Walford, Newcastle, WY; 8 grandchildren Karen, Patrick, Katie, Colleen; Justin, Julie; Jayson, Anna; 19 great grandchildren; sister Blanche Harmon of Devils Lake and several nieces and nephews. Morgan was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel; parents; sister Lorraine Carpineto and great grandson Jakob Coy. The family thanks Dr. Downs, the nurses and staff for the compassionate care given to Morgan during his stay at Mercy Hospital. Funeral Services for Morgan will be held on Friday, June 12, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Devils Lake with Reverend Jeff Nicla officiating. Burial will be in the Devils Lake Cemetery with Military Honors accorded by the Neathery-Simensen Post #756, Devils Lake Veterans of Foreign Wars and the North Dakota Military Funeral Honors Team. Visitation will be held at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Thursday from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. and will continue at the church on Friday one hour prior to the funeral service.
