Douglas Bernard, son of Lyle and Mary Ann (Zazeck) Stack was born along with his twin brother Don on September 28, 1952 in Coon Rapids, Minnesota. He grew up and was educated in Coon Rapids and graduated with the class of 1971 from Coon Rapids High School.
He then began a career in food service that would be his life-long passion. He worked for Canteen Food Services in Minnesota for a time and that led him to Devils Lake where he worked at Lake Region Junior College in the food service department. While in Devils Lake, Douglas met the love of his life, Cheryl Soper and they were united in marriage on September 15, 1979 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church. A year later they had their first child, Tanya. An opportunity to work for PFM (professional food service management) meant a move to Iowa in the early 1980’s.
They added a son, Shawn to the family and made Iowa their home for several years. But a return to Devils Lake beckoned them so in 1985 they made the move back to Devils Lake and for 30 years, Douglas worked in the Bakery Department of Leever’s County Market until his retirement. His early years in the Bakery were with Stan Orness who taught him the ropes and became a good friend.
Working in the Bakery meant early to work and 8 hours in by noon, so Douglas decided he shouldn’t waste time watching TV so he began working part time for the Devils Lake Journal as a route carrier. Part time turned into 20 years of service for the Journal.
Douglas still had some daylight hours so he joined South Gate and faithfully lifted weights as often as possible. His work ethic was impeccable and never called in sick even though he wasn’t always 100 percent.
He enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and work out time at South Gate very much. He and his son spent many afternoons on Devils Lake fishing and taking in the quiet beauty of nature. Douglas’ second passion was the Chicago Cubs and he was their number one fan.
Douglas’ loving family include his wife, Cheryl; son Shawn Stack, Devils Lake and daughter Tanya Stack, Duluth, GA; grandsons Landon Stack, Anne Carlson Center in Jamestown, ND and Blake Stack of Minot, ND; mother Mary Ann Stack, Kennewick, WA; brothers and their spouses Chuck and Gayle Stack also of Kennewick, twin brother Don Stack, Brooklyn Center, MN, Matt Stack, Glendale, CO, Mike and Denise Stack, Zimmerman, MN and Gordon and Melissa Stack, Cookeville, TN; mother-in-law Mae Soper, Devils Lake; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Mark and Cindy Soper, Devils Lake, Rick and Cathy Soper, Prior Lake, MN and Gary and Kim Soper, Grand Forks; many nieces and nephews.
