Thomas Milton Moen, 92 a life-long resident and farmer of the Lake Region area, passed away on Sunday, July 26, 2015 at Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, ND.
Thomas Milton, son of Tom O. and Minnie (Anderson) Moen was born on February 17, 1923 at General Hospital, Devils Lake. He was reared and educated in Pelican Township and worked for his Uncle Knute Anderson and local farmers.
Milt entered the United States Army in January of 1946 and served his country during World War II and was honorably discharged in March of 1947. He returned to the family farm and farming; nurturing and respecting the land was his life’s work and his hobby. He worked hard to provide for his family and was thankful for the blessings farm life brought to them. His love of the land extended to gardening and the beauty of flowers.
Milt was united in marriage to Betty Rasmussen (Sjoberg) on February 6, 1965 in Devils Lake. Betty joined him on the farm and they had a beautiful life together for 50 years. In 1990 Milt retired and they moved to Devils Lake in 2010.
Milt was very involved in his church and community. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Churchs Ferry until it closed and then joined Leeds Lutheran Church. He was a life member of the VFW Post #756 and the Cooties. He served on the Churchs Ferry School Board, as a director of the Churchs Ferry Fire Department, as assessor of Riggin Township for many years and for eight years on the Benson County Weed Board. He enjoyed membership in the Eagles Lodge and Elks Lodge #1216.
Milt’s life centered on his faith, family, friends and farming.
Milt is survived by his wife, Betty; children Jeff (Karen) Sjoberg, Prairie du Chien, WI, Jolaine (John) Smith, Devils Lake, Debra (David) Nybo, Fargo, ND and Wanda Follman, York, ND; grandchildren Mattea Nybo, Spencer, Shelby and Sloane Follman, Kelley, Blake (Cassie) and Brett (Heidi) Sjoberg, Brody (Sammi) and Mackenzie Smith; great grandchildren Arie, Jobi, Avery, Kendall and Kaleb and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law Todd Follman; brother and sister-in-law Lester and Martha Moen.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, July 31, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at Leeds Lutheran Church, Leeds, ND with Reverend Michael Pretzer officiating. Burial will be in the Norway Lutheran Cemetery, rural Devils Lake. Visitation will be held on Friday at the church two hours prior to the funeral service.
Casket Bearers will be John Smith, David Nybo, Spencer Follman, Brody Smith, Blake Sjoberg and Brett Sjoberg. Honorary Bearers will be all of his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Music will be provided by Dan and MiChelle Nybo.
