Mary Concepta “Connie” Smith, 72 of Devils Lake, ND died at her home with her family on Wednesday morning, August 5, 2015.
Mass of the Resurrection will be held on Monday, August 10, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Devils Lake with burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Sunday, August 9th from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a Rosary and Scripture Service at 7:00 pm and visitation will continue at the church on Monday one hour prior to the funeral Mass.
Connie was born on December 8, 1942 in Devils Lake to Vernon and Mabel (LaFournaise) Rice. Mary grew up on the family farm in Lohnes Township until her father’s death in 1954, when the family moved to Devils Lake. Connie attended St. Mary’s Academy where she graduated in 1960. She married Gilbert Smith in 1962.
Connie was a bookkeeper for Keating’s Furniture and then Christie’s Foods in Devils Lake. Later she worked in gaming at the Eagle’s Club and most recently at Spirit Lake Casino, where she worked until illness forced her to retire. She fought a long and hard battle with cancer.
Connie enjoyed spending time reading, word puzzles, spending time with her children and grandchildren and beloved cats Missy, Scamp and Callie and does Sheba and Miley.
Connie is survived by her husband, Gilbert, daughters Lori (Craig) Hadlock, Lancaster, CA and Joni (Jim) Ross, Webster, ND; sons Tracy (Judy) Smith, Addison, New York and Donald (Jackie) Smith, Corpus Christi, TX; grandchildren Blake, Bethany, Kati (Wilson) and Trevor Hadlock, Tristan. William Joel (Hayley) and Kevin (fiancé Elia Lam) Ross, Traylynn and Tiessa Smith, Micki White, Kelvin, Jacob, Dakota and Reagan Smith; great grandchildren Jillian and Christopher Ross, Blaine Kendell and Tavon and Blaze Lee; sister Ida (Larry) Miller, Devils Lake; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Jack (Dixie) Smith, Tom (Gloria) Smith, Doris (Gilbert) Anderson, Barb (Dave) Olson and many nieces and nephews.
Connie was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Jack and Jerome Rice; sister Elizabeth Rieger and in-laws Gilbert Smith Sr., Myrtle Smith-Mahoney and Lyle Mahoney.
