Michael F. “Mike” Haman, 91 of Devils Lake formerly of Minnewaukan, ND passed away Thursday evening, August 20, 2015 at Heartland Care Center, Devils Lake in the care of his family, Altru Hospice and with special thanks to the caring and devoted staff of the Heartland Care Center for their kind and loving care shown to Mike and his family through the years. Mass of the Resurrection for Mike will be held on Tuesday, August 25, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Devils Lake with the Very Reverend C.F. Wilhelm celebrating the Mass. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church on Monday beginning at 3:00 p.m. with a Rosary and Scripture Service at 5:00 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church on Tuesday one hour prior to the funeral service. Mike, son of Frank M. and Mary (Schmaltz) Haman was born on January 14, 1924 at Orrin, ND. He was reared in the Blumenfeld/Orrin area and attended the Jefferson Township School, near Fulda, ND. Mike was united in marriage to Agnes A. Schneider on September 30, 1946 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Orrin. They farmed in Pierce County until 1949, then moved to Benson County and farmed in Minnewaukan area until 1963 and then moved into Minnewaukan and Mike worked as a carpenter for 20 years with Minnewaukan Lumber Yard. In 1993, they moved to Devils Lake and made their home here through the years. Mike felt blessed to be able to live independently and care for his beloved wife until moving to Heartland Care Center one month ago. Mike was always a very active member of the church and his community, serving as a charter member of Minnewaukan’s St. James Church and Council in various capacities and as a former Knights of Columbus. His community service, especially as a Senior Citizen included serving as a Past President of the Benson County 55 Club, Minnewaukan 55 Club and the Ramsey County 55 Club. He was a Delegate to the North Dakota Silver-Haired Commission for Benson County for 6 years and served as the Treasurer for the Silver-Haired Steering Committee for North Dakota for three years. His service to community included eighteen years as a councilman on the Minnewaukan City Council, twelve years as a Director on the North Central Planning Commission and chairman of this commission for 2 years and also as a Director and President of the Western Resource Conservation and Development Task Force. But Mike’s first priority was always his family. He was a devoted and loving husband to Agnes and his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were his pride and joy. He considered himself a blessed man and had a deep faith and trust in God. We are inspired to carry out his legacy of love in our lives and we will cherish our memories of him forever. Mike is survived by his wife of nearly 69 years, Agnes; children Bernadine (Eugene) Howard, Rugby, ND, Mary (Tom) Dion, Jerome M. Haman, Marlene (Rick) Morse, Connie (Ken) Shirek all of Devils Lake, Richard Haman, Lafayette, OR, Michel Davidson, Devils Lake, Eileen (Rich) Solberg, Surrey, ND, Rose (Bill) Streifel, Oberon, ND and Denise (Paul) Arends also of Devils Lake; 20 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren; adopted daughters Michelle Brazile and Suzy Peterson; brothers Alfred (Bernie) Haman, Bismarck and David Haman, Minot; sisters Agnes Duchscherer, Drake, ND, Frances (Ed) Braunagel, Bismarck and Leona VanNorman, Billings, MT; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law Dickie Haman, Bismarck, Betty Haman, Rolette, Nettie Schneider, Orrin, Irene Schneider, Devils Lake and Francis and Gloria Schneider, St. Paul, MN and many nieces, nephews and their families. Preceded by his parents; brothers August, Daniel and Leonard Haman and sisters Magdaline Volk and Eva Jundt. Serving as Casket Bearers will be Mike’s grandsons Darryl Howard, Jeffrey, Joey and William Dion, Chad Jerome Haman, Jon Morse, Michael and Bradley Shirek, Trent Davidson, Kyle and Kory Solberg. Reading the Scriptures will be Janelle Engstrom and Suzy Peterson and Gift Bearers will be Mike’s granddaughters Janelle Engstrom, Sara Gebhardt, Amy Rader, Katie Dion, Cara Lynn Mulfinger, Jessica Rolland, Jennifer Weigelt, Lindsey VanThuyne and Kindra Hines.
