(Hansen) Lauinger was born on July 13, 1943 in Devils Lake, ND. She was baptized at Rutten Catholic Church and confirmed at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Devils Lake. Carol was raised on a rural farm near Webster and attended the Morris Township Country School through the 7th grade. She then attended Central High School in Devils Lake and finished in 1961. She started her first job at The Barrel while she was in High School. Carol was united in marriage to the love of her life, Richard E. Kurtz, on September 13, 1961 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. They made their home on the Kurtz family farm, west of Tokio, ND. Their union welcomed 3 children, Richard A. Jr., Dennis P. and Carla J. In 1974, Richard and Carol, took over the family farm after his father retired. Their dedication to the farm allowed them to spread out their farming operation. Carol worked side by side with Richard, many long hours in the fields. Carol also spent many hours in her gardens to provide for her family. She mourned the loss of her husband in 1998, but continued to live on the family farm until her death. Her sons carried on as the third generation to farm the family homestead. Carol was a fantastic homemaker, as she was always cooking, baking, canning or preserving. Her favorite thing to do was to sew. She made many of her family’s clothing and in the later years leading up to her death, she enjoyed crocheting, making quilts and table runners, using her embroidery machine, and she tried her hand at many new craft projects. Everywhere we turn, we are reminded of Carol as her craft projects adorn our homes. She also loved to read and play her accordion and organ for her family and friends. Many memories were made with neighbors visiting, playing cards, and helping anyone who needed a hand. The camaraderie with neighbors was important to Carol and she especially enjoyed happy celebrations that included music and dancing. Carol was a woman of faith. She was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church in St. Michael, ND and also the Christ the King Church in Tokio, ND. She volunteered her time on several projects at the churches such as teaching catechism, cleaning the churches, and volunteering anywhere, where needed. She was President of the Warwick Public School Board in the ‘80s. She was a co-leader for 4-H in the early ‘80’s. Up to her death, she was a member of the Benson County Social Services and Lake Region Human Services Board in Devils Lake. She also briefly worked at Christopher Banks and Fashion Boutique after she was widowed.
