Eunice Ellen was born in Fort Totten, ND on November 7, 1940, the daughter of Joseph and Mary Jane (Lohnes) McKay. She attended school at Little Flower in St. Michael and also high school at Stephan, South Dakota. She graduated on May 19, 1960.
She met her first husband, Alex Greywater Jr. in 1961 and they married and moved to Aberdeen, SD. They were the proud parents of 3 children, Lisa, Alex III and Shirley. While in Aberdeen, Eunice attended a hairstyling school. They relocated to Omaha, NE in 1963, then moved back to Fort Totten where they made their home. Eunice continued her education at UND, Grand Forks and received her Associate of Art Degree.
Her marriage to Alex ended in divorce and Eunice continued to live in Fort Totten. In 1975 she attended United Tribes in Bismarck and completed the Business Clerical Certification Program on September 9, 1976. She moved back to Fort Totten again to make it her home.
Eunice met and married Willis Whiteman in 1984. They moved to Fargo and worked and lived there for about 3 years. Eunice moved back to Fort Totten and returned to school at Little Hoop College and on May 15, 1992, was certified in Child Development. She then worked at the WIC office for several years and later at Spirit Lake Casino and Resort for several years. Eunice was never idle and worked until she retired in 2009 at the age of 69 years. She also raised her grandson, Marty Greywater since he was 12 years old.
Eunice was a loving and caring person, always helping whenever and where ever there was a need. She never expected anyone else to do it. She just “did it”. She was always the first to visit the shut-ins and those hospitalized from the Spirit Lake Nation, helping them anyway she could. But she never ran out of energy, she was a meticulous housekeeper, everything was clean, neat and orderly from top to bottom, even the garage. When she took the time for herself, she enjoyed powwows, rodeos and traveling. In her younger years, she played the organ at Seven Dolors Catholic Church.
Eunice was short in stature, but had the biggest heart for loving and caring for her dear family, relatives and friends. She will be so very missed by all who had come to know and love her through the years.
