CATHERINE SCHERR WENTZ

Catherine Wentz, 100 of Devils Lake formerly of Minnewaukan, ND passed away on Tuesday, October 20, 2015 at Eventide Heartland Care Center, Devils Lake surrounded by her loving family. Mass of the Resurrection will be held on Wednesday, October 28, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Devils Lake with Very Reverend C.F. Wilhelm and Fr. Charles Leute concelebrateing the Mass. Burial will be held in St. James Cemetery, rural Minnewaukan. Visitation will be held at St. Joseph Church on Tuesday from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a Rosary and Scripture Service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue on Wednesday one hour prior to the funeral Mass. Catherine, daughter of Anton and Mary Eva (Eisenzimmer) Scherr was born at home on the family farm in Pierce County of North Dakota on November 8, 1914. She grew up in the Balta area and attended Brazil School District #20 country school. Catherine was united in marriage to Nick A. Wentz on July 17, 1933 at Balta. They lived in the Balta and York areas for a few years before moving to a farmstead near Baker, ND. In 1942, they purchased their own farm west of Minnewaukan and resided there until 1977 when they moved into Minnewaukan. Nick died on September 7, 1986. In 2011, Catherine moved to Devils Lake. She was an active member of St. James Catholic Church and the Altar Society in Minnewaukan until it closed, then joined St. Joseph Catholic Church in Devils Lake. Catherine enjoyed many hobbies including sewing, gardening, canning, quilting, crocheting, making rugs, embroidering dish towels and making time for a good game of cards and conversation whenever possible. Catherine felt blessed to have such a long life, even with its many trials. To her, the greatest blessing was her beautiful family and dear friends. Catherine is survived by her children Wendelin (Norma) Wentz, Spokane, WA, Leona Borg, Benton City, WA, Edward Wentz, Devils Lake, Dennis (Ruth) Wentz, Minnewaukan, Gerald Wentz, Minot, ND, James Wentz, Joan (Charles) Korb, Larry Wentz all of Devils Lake, Mary Ann (Nick) Hettwer, Calio, ND, Ralph (Jane) Wentz, Peter (Barb) Wentz and Leroy (Desiree) Wentz also all Devils Lake; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren and great great great grandchildren and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Nick; sons Howard, Albert and Paul Wentz; grandchildren Wayne, Kim,Kenny and Joey Wentz; great grandchildren Emily Hettwer and Timothy Wentz; brothers Peter, Wendelin and Martin Scherr; sisters Helen Kremer, Mary Kremer and Anna Mary Kremer; son-in-law John Borg. Serving as Casket Bearers will be Catherine’s grandsons, Roger, Brandon, Ronald, Dennis James, Mike and Matt Wentz and James and Donald Skadsem. Honorary Bearers will be all of Catherine’s grandchildren. Reading the scripture will be Charity Haugland and Gift Bearers will be McKenna Walker, Allyson and Breden Hermanson. Music will be provide by Lynne Webster and Audrey Myklebust.
