Viola Mae Schneider, 86, life-long resident of Devils Lake, passed away on Wednesday, October 28, 2015 at Eventide Heartland Care Center, Devils Lake surrounded by family.
Viola was born on December 8, 1928 to Robert F. and Dorothy E. (Elliot) Frost in Melfort, Saskatchewan, Canada. She attended elementary school in McVille and Lakota ND and graduated from Devils Lake High School in the Class of 1946.
Viola (a convert to the catholic faith) married John Schneider in 1948 by the Justice of the Peace. On August 20, 1951 their marriage was blessed at St. Joseph's Catholic Church by the Reverend Adam Hunkler, OSB. Viola and John lived their entire married life in Devils Lake. In the 1950's and 60's Viola worked at Fairview Grocery where she received her nickname "Frosty" and later worked at Christie's Fairway Grocery Store/Wally's retiring in 1991. In 1976, Viola and John fulfilled a life long dream of building a home in rural Devils Lake and did the majority of the construction themselves. Viola's great love was living in the country, planting and caring for her flower beds, tending her two large gardens, canning, and sharing the produce with her family. Viola's grandchildren were very important to her and she never missed an opportunity to make their two favorite meals, homemade chicken and noodles and Grandma's barbecued ribs. Viola was always ready for a card game of Shanghi, dominoes, or kings in the corner. In her younger years she enjoyed bowling, fishing, crocheting, and knitting. Her dream of being a great grandmother became reality with the birth of Sydney and Callen.
Viola is survived by her husband, John; son, Rick (Terri) Schneider of Devils Lake; three grandchildren, Beth Schneider, Devils Lake; Craig (Marisa) Schneider, Savage MN; Tim (Amanda) Schneider, Bloomington IL; great-grandchildren, Sydney Jo Schneider, Bloomington IL and Callen John Schneider, Savage MN, sister Ellen "Curly" Christopher of Salt Lake City UT, and companion cat, Plynko.
Viola was preceded in death by her parents, wonderful and caring foster parents, Donald and Pauline Baldwin; and sister, Elva Gunkel.
