Leah R. Herald, “Zuyå-Mani-Wi, (Walks with the Soldier Woman) 39 of Devils Lake and the Spirit Lake Nation went to the Spirit World on Friday, December 4, 2015 at the home of her aunt and in the loving care of family and Altru Hospice. Leah Rae Herald was born on June 22, 1976 to Driscilla Crowe and Nathan Crazy Bull in Poplar, Montana and was adopted by Lynda Thompson (Herald) in 1977 in Devils Lake, ND. Leah was 9 years old when she lost her mother, Lynda and was then raised by her grandparents Mary Louise and Ambrose Thompson until she turned 18. She was raised in Devils Lake and on the Spirit Lake Nation and attended Four Winds School. She did return to Montana to live for a couple of years. She courageously fought health problems most of her life and treasured each day as a blessing. She loved to “hang out” with friends and family. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. She is survived by her North Dakota family which include her children Maverick Herald, Cierra Lovejoy, James Lovejoy Jr., Rolinda Herald and Phillip BigTrack; aunts Marilyn Thompson, Cindy Thompson, Paula Thompson, Sharon Cavanaugh and uncle Calvin Thompson all of St. Michael, ND; many nieces and nephews and a special friend Earl Landers. Survivors also include her Montana family. Sisters Virgene Crowe, Carolyn Longtree and Jennifer Crowe; brothers Stan Longtree, Matthew Longtree, Theo Crowe and Chris Crowe; grandmas Evadna Running Bear, Estelle (LaVern) Loves Him, JoAnn Crazy Bull, Margaret Hapa, Annie Lester, Yvette White Haute, Tara Longtree and Maria Longtree; grandpas Clarence Longtree and Edgar Jones; uncles Levi Crowe Youngman, Marvin Running Bear and Isaac Miller; aunties Donna Crowe Youngman, Julia Young, Patty Youngman, Janelle Menz, Rebecca Loves Him, Margaret Loves Him, Zelda Loves Him, Aphelia Crazy Bull, Anna Marie Crazy Bull and Ladonna Youngman. She was preceded in death by her parents Driscilla and Nathan; mother Lynda Thompson; grandparents Mary Louise (Brown) and Ambrose Thompson; sister Leah Crowe and uncle Kenny Thompson. The Wake for Leah will be held at the St. Michael Wellness Center on Friday, December 11, 2015 beginning at 5:00 p.m. with a Prayer Service and Time of Remembrance at 8:00 p.m. The procession to St. Michael will leave on Friday at 4:00 p.m. from the former Wal-Mart. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, December 12th at 10:00 a.m. also at the St. Michael Wellness Center. All Drum Groups, Singers and any other music are welcome to share their songs in memory of Leah. Active Pallbearers will be Calvin Thompson, Anthony Thompson, Everett Thompson, Russell Littleghost, Rory Littleghost, Keith Longie, Delbert Herald and Glen Vondell. Honorary Bearers will be the Brenda Peltier Family, Comilla Peltier, Lila Vondell Family, Francis Fournier, Monica McKay, Ginger Rue, Mary Rue, Germaine Thompson, Arnie Calf Boss Ribs, Grand Forks Altru Hospital Nursing Staff, Altru Hospice of Devils Lake and all of Leah’s many friends in the Devils Lake area. If we forgot to name someone, it wasn’t intentional. Please forgive us in this very difficult time.
