Lawrence “Dean” Young, (Gray Wolf) 65 of Tokio, ND began his journey to the Spirit World on Wednesday, January 13, 2016 at the Good Samaritan Center, Devils Lake, ND. The Wake for Dean will be held on Tuesday, January 19, 2016 at the Dakotah Oyate Lutheran Church, rural Tokio beginning at a 7:00 p.m. The procession to the church will leave at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday from the former Wal-Mart parking lot. Funeral Services will be at the church on Wednesday, January 20, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. with Reverend Larry Thiele officiating. Burial will be in the Dakota Oyate Cemetery. Military Honors will be accorded by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #6547. Lawrence Dean, son of Gabriel and Evelyn (LeftBear) Young was born on August 9, 1950 at Devils Lake, ND. He lived much of his life on the Spirit Lake Nation, but attended a few years of grade school in Los Angeles, California, then returned to the Tokio, ND area and attended Tokio Public School and graduated from Warwick High School. While in High School he was part of the Upward Bound Program and he then continued his education at UND, Grand Forks. He was a cadet at West Point Academy for 6 months then entered the United States Navy on October 29, 1971 at Tokio, ND. He served stateside and in Guam and was honorably discharged on February 13, 1974 with the rank of Navy Airman. He returned to North Dakota and attended Bismarck State College and also the Navajo Community College in Yuba City, Arizona. Dean and Jan were united in marriage and established their home near St. Michael, ND. Dean worked as a Dispatcher for the Fort Totten Police Departments for several years. For the past 18 years, Dean has been a resident of the Good Samaritan Center because of his failing health. In his younger years, Dean liked to dance Grass Dance and enjoyed pow-wows, arts and crafts, movies, traveling, cooking and also dabbled in carpentry. He was active in his Native American Church and was proud of his traditional ways. Dean especially loved attending family activities and spending time with his family and friends. Dean was married to Laverne (Martin) Young and to this marriage were born two children Trunson Cody Young and Echo Robyn Young. He is currently married to Jan Young and also survived by his children Echo Robyn Young and Trunson Cody Young both of Elko, NV; brothers Justin J. Young, Warwick and Wesley Young, St. Michael; sister Trudy (Clinton) Young LaRoque, Sheyenne, ND; aunts Pauline Myrick and Ramona LeftBear; uncle Miles LeftBear; many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Gabe and Evelyn; brother Trunson Wade Young and sister Cleo Young Hapa. Pallbearers for Dean will be Lance Young, Richard Cavanaugh, Harlan Blueshield, Edward “Rocky” Hill, Erich Longie Jr. and Matthew Wallace. Honorary Bearers are the Staff of the Good Samaritan Home, Spirit Lake Tribe, those who helped him in anyway throughout his life and his many dear relatives and friends.
