Schneider was born on December 20, 1922 in Devils Lake ND and raised by his grandparents, John and Josephine (Klitzel) Schneider. He attended St. Mary’s High School through the eighth grade. John was married to Viola M. Frost in 1948 by the Justice of the Peace. On August 20, 1951 their marriage was blessed at St. Joseph's Catholic Church by the Reverend Adam Hunkler, OSB. John’s true love, Viola, passed away on October 28, 2015. He was eager to join her and our Heavenly Father. John was a World War II veteran and served with Cannon Company, 317th Infantry Regiment, 80th Division from 1943 to 1946. He served under General George S. Patton, participating in battles and campaigns through northern France, The Ardennes: Battle of the Bulge, Rhineland, Central Europe, and the Lorraine Campaign. A talented “do it yourself” man, many in Devils Lake knew him as “the carpet layer”. He subcontracted with a number of furniture stores over the years including Hetland’s Furniture and LaMotte’s Paint & Glass Supply; laying carpet in many homes and commercial buildings in Devils Lake and surrounding area during his long career. John and Viola fulfilled a life-long dream of building a home in rural Devils Lake and were proud to have completed the majority of the construction themselves. He loved country living, caring for the land, trees, and tending two (sometimes three) large gardens. John and Viola worked as a team canning, cooking, and gardening eager to share garden produce with family and friends. John was always ready for a board game and his favorite card game, Shanghi, which was passed down from generation to generation. In 2012, John and Viola sold their rural home and moved into the city of Devils Lake. John is survived his son, Rick (Terri) Schneider of Devils Lake, and three grandchildren, Beth Schneider, Devils Lake ND; Craig (Marisa) Schneider, Savage MN; Tim (Amanda) Schneider, Bloomington IL; great granddaughter, Sydney Jo and great grandson, Callen John; sister-in-law, Ellen Christopher and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Viola; parents, grandparents, brother, Robert; sister-in-law and brother in-law, Ernest and Elva Gunkel; and brother-in-law Fred Christopher. John will be greatly missed by his family and cat buddy, Plynko, who has been his loving companion for 12 years. Blessed be the memory of John P. Schneider.
