Shigeko "Toni" Burdick

Shigeko “Toni” Burdick, 88 of Devils Lake, ND passed away on Wednesday, March 30, 2016 at Eventide Heartland Care Center, Devils Lake in the loving care of her family and Altru Hospice. Funeral Services for Toni will be held on Monday, April 4, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Peace Lutheran Church, Devils Lake with Reverend Lyle Belleque officiating. Visitation will be held at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Sunday, April 3rd from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. with the family present from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Visitation on Monday will be at the church one hour prior to the funeral service. Burial will be in the Minnewaukan Cemetery, Minnewaukan, ND. Shigeko Burdick was born May 23, 1927 in Kyoto, Japan. She was the oldest of 7 children. In her childhood she helped care for her grandmother and she enjoyed going to the botanical gardens in Kyoto. Shigeko attended secretarial school and held several office jobs during World War II. She married Richard Burdick on February 5, 1951 in Kobe, Japan. While married they moved several times. They lived in Japan, Wisconsin, Germany, Missouri, Louisiana, and North Dakota. Richard and Shigeko raised five children? Margaret, Rosemary, Jim, Joe and Sally. Shigeko was a wonderful homemaker and cook. She sewed, crocheted and knitted, making many clothes and blankets for family and friends. There was always a welcoming meal whenever someone came to visit, and if she knew your favorite meal she would always make it when you came to visit. Shigeko enjoyed the outdoors, she loved to garden and to fish. She also loved indoor activities such as cards and bingo. Richard died in April 2004 after which Shigeko became a US citizen with the help of her family in August 2005. She was then able to visit Japan and family members there. In April 2011 Shigeko moved to Eventide Heartland Care Center, where she resided until her death. Shigeko is survived by her five children, Margaret, (John) Ridley of Dickinson, ND, Rosemary (Jim) Ridley of Bismarck, ND, Jim (Nancy) Burdick of West Fargo, ND, Joe (Kim) Burdick, and Sally (Rob) Dahl both of Devils Lake; 10 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and husband Richard.
