Frederick “Freddy” King, 73 of Devils Lake and the Spirit Lake Nation passed away on Saturday morning, April 16, 2016 at the Good Samaritan Center, Devils Lake.
Visitation will be held at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, St. Michael, ND on Wednesday, April 20, 2016 beginning at 5:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. with a Rosary and Scripture Service at 7:00 p.m. The procession to St. Michael will leave at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday at City Plaza.
Funeral Services for Freddy will be on Thursday, April 21st at 10:00 a.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church with Father Paul Schuster celebrating the Mass. Burial will be in St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery. Military Honors will be accorded by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #7546.
Frederick, son of Jerome and Mary (Lohnes) King was born on July 13, 1942 at Fort Totten, ND. He grew up in Fort Totten and attended school at Calvary Square and also at Stephen, South Dakota. After graduating from high school, Frederick enlisted in the United States Navy on January 14, 1964 at Cleveland, Ohio. He served his country with honor for over 30 years with over 19 years in active service.
Frederick’s active service was during the Vietnam War. He served in Guam on two different tours and then the remainder of his service was in California. Throughout his career, he advanced through the ranks in terms of his skills in ship maintenance. He was trained in basic hand tools, as a firefighter ship board, aviation and helicopter, ship fitter, gas welder and brazer, general damage control equipment technician, repair and sea fire party leader, plumber, electrician and all aspects of ship maintenance and repair. He was honorably discharged from active duty on July 31, 1983 with the rank of HT 1. (Hull Maintenance Technician) Throughout his career, he consistently met the requirements for good conduct service and received his Gold Rate Insignias. He served in Fleet Reserve until his retirement.
While in the Navy, on a trip to San Francisco, he met his beloved Mollie Rodriquez. It was love at first sight and he knew she was the love of his life and they were married on April 11, 1966 at Riverside, CA. She followed him where ever his career would take him as a loving and devoted wife and mother. After retirement, the family returned to the Spirit Lake Nation. Due to increasing health problems for Mollie, they moved to Minnesota. Mollie died on August 9, 2001.
Freddy stayed in Minnesota until 2011 when he felt a need to “be home” until his passing to the Spirit World on Saturday morning. He was blessed to be in the loving care of his daughter Madeline and other dear family members.
In retirement, Freddy enjoyed wood working and carpentry. He loved the outdoors and the beauty of nature so on those beautiful days in the Midwest he was fishing or doing yard work.
Freddy served his country with honor, gave his love and caring ways to his wife and family and gave praise to his Lord and Savior. He will be so greatly missed by all who knew him and loved him.
He is survived by his daughters Madeline King, Devils Lake and Eva King of White Bear Lake, MN; sons Steven (Jessica) King and Adam (Lisha) King; grandchildren Amollia, Terrance, Jace, Jerden and several others; son-in-law Bruce Hicks; sisters Annette Smith, Oakland, CA and Juanita Giron-Vargas, Devils Lake; brother Sidney Francis King, Hayward, WI; many nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Mollie; brothers Wayne King, Duane King and Vincent King; sister Barbara Jean Thompson; nephews Delbert Thompson, Damian Thompson and James LaCroix; cousin Roger Herman.
Casket Bearers for Freddy will be Mylo IronBear, Adrian Fredricks, Terrance Hicks, Jace Keyes, Jerden Keyes, Marty Greywater, Elton Greywater and Ethan Nash.
