Darren James McKay, “Nav” 44 of Fort Totten, ND began his journey to the Spirit World on Sunday, June 19, 2016 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND. He was given the Indian name, Wicowahba Yuhamani which means “Walks With Humility”. He who has walked the path of humility on this earthly journey, soars highest on the journey to the Spirit World.
Darren James was born on March 12, 1972 at Mercy Hospital in Devils Lake, ND, the son of Cissy and Andrew Kahn. He was reared and educated in Fort Totten, ND and also at the Wahpeton Indian School.
Darren worked for a time at Sioux Manufactoring and the Cankdeska Cikana Community College until health problems forced him to retire.
Darren loved spending time with his family and friends. He enjoyed singing Indian songs and creating new songs and rhythms with his drum. His mother, Cissy loved to join in the singing with Darren.
Darren is survived by his mother Cissy; brothers Royce “Stubby” McKay, Dustin McKay, Robin McKay, Casey McKay and Alden McKay; sister Michelle Kahn; aunts Ramona (John) Chaske, Josie McKay, Anna McKay and Rosita McKay; uncles Ronnie McKay, Busty (Candice) McKay, Corby (Arvella) McKay, Murray (Donna) McKay, Kenny McKay and Ray Kahn; numerous cousins also survive.
He was preceded in death by his Dad, Andrew Kahn; brother Jason McKay; grandparents Jesse McKay Sr. and Angeline McKay; uncles Jerome “Sonny” McKay, Patrick McKay, Rodney “Cowboy” McKay, Jesse McKay Jr., and Robert “Sox” McKay; aunt Barbara McKay; nephew Malachi McKay; cousins John Chaske Jr. and Melissa Chaske.
The Wake for Darren will be at the Fort Totten Wellness Center, on Friday, June 24, 2016 beginning at 5:00 p.m. The procession to Fort Totten will leave at 4:00 p.m. on Friday from the City Plaza in Devils Lake.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, June 25, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at Seven Dolors Catholic Church, Fort Totten with Father Charles Leute OP celebrating the Mass. Darren will be laid to rest in St. Jerome’s Cemetery, rural Fort Totten.
Casket Bearers for Darren will be John Posey, Dustin McKay, Jake Redfox, Leon LaRock, Alden McKay, Royce McKay, Roger Charboneau and Melvin Peoples.
Honorary Pallbearers will be all of Navajo’s friends of the Spirit Lake Nation.
