Carl B. Walking Eagle Sr.

Carl B. (the “Fonz”) Walking Eagle, Sr., “Ista To To” (Blue Eyes/Light Eyes) 74 of Fort Totten, ND peacefully passed on to the Spirit World at home on Sunday, July 24, 2016 with his loving family by his side. Visitation for Carl will be held at Seven Dolors Catholic Church, Fort Totten, ND on Thursday, July 28, 2016 beginning at 5:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. with a Rosary and Scripture Service at 8:00 p.m. The procession to Fort Totten will leave at 4:00 p.m. from the City Plaza Lot, Devils Lake. Mass of the Resurrection will be held on Friday, July 29th at 10:00 a.m. at Seven Dolors Church with Father Charles Leute celebrating the Mass. Burial will be in the WalkingEagle Family Cemetery with a meal to follow the burial at the Spirit Lake Casino and Resort, in the Ballroom. Carl son of Tony and Grace (Shaw) Walking Eagle was born on December 10, 1941 at Fort Totten, ND. He grew up in the Fort Totten area and attended School at Fort Totten until going on to Flandreau Indian School in SD and graduated high school there. He went on to continue his education and graduated from a Business College in Colorado. He later moved to Los Angeles, CA and got a job as the business manager at National General Corporation now known as Fox Theaters. Carl married Barbara Cavanaugh on July 02, 1968 at Los Angeles and later had their marriage blessed. They would later establish their home in the Crow Hill area and raised their four children. Being a Business man was Carl’s passion and he never truly retired from doing business. He spent 38 years serving the people of the Spirit Lake Nation as the District Councilman of Crow Hill and he also was the Vice Chairman for the SLN. He grasped every opportunity to make Spirit Lake Nation a place to be proud of. He was involved in many economic developments such as the Four Winds School and the new addition which is the Middle school. He was most proud of accomplishing his dream of the tribe having their very own Casino and Resort and he did accomplish his dream, creating 1500 jobs for his Spirit Lake members. Carl was a life time member of the Miraculous Medal Association, although he was a busy person, he always took time to pray and never stopped believing. He played basketball in High School and understood the game of ball! He enjoyed watching Rick Smith coach a team of boys each year and anxiously followed them game to game until he no longer could and then he listened on the radio and cheered and yelled behind closed doors. He loved to travel, collect Old Time Rock N Roll music, and play cards with his family on holidays. Carl is survived by his loving family. His wife Barbara of 48 years; sons: Benny Wayne of Jamestown, ND, Curtis Walking Eagle, Sr. and Carl (CJ)Walking Eagle, Jr. of Crow Hill; Daughter: Carlene (Doug) Peltier of Grand Forks; Grandchildren: Kaylee Ann, Shay, and Stetson (ST) Walking Eagle of Crow Hill, Riley and Curtis Walking Eagle, Jr. of Devils Lake, Gracie and Gage Walking Eagle, Special Grand-daughter Mayleina (May May), special great grandson, Keon Michael WalkingEagle, his basketball player, and grandchildren Carleigh, Carlynn, Carlisle and Carl III Walking Eagle all of Crow Hill, ND, Shenice Walking Eagle and Tashina Walking Eagle of Wood Lake, ND, Regina Odom of Casper, Wyoming, Shalee Allen, of Skokomish, WA, Chelsea Walking Eagle of Minot, ND; Brennon, Brelyn and Brenner Peltier; 4 Great Grandchildren, Brothers: Kermit and Bruce Walking Eagle both of Crow Hill, Ronald (Lorna) Walking Eagle of Wood Lake; Sisters: Martina (Butch) Kazena, Charlene Walking Eagle of Crow Hill; Jeanette Walking Eagle and Jeannie Walking Eagle of Grand Forks, ND, Phyllis WalkingEagle of Devils Lake and Lorna WalkingEagle of Minot, ND; Godchild Leo (JR) Delorme, Jr., Uncle: Steven Hoksina of Devils Lake, Many nieces and nephews, sister-in-law’s and brother-in-law’s. Carl was preceded in death by his parents: Tony and Grace Walking Eagle; Maternal Grandparents: William Four Bear Shaw, Sr. and Jean (Woods) Shaw; Paternal Grand Parents Caleb Smith & Agnes (Marion) Walking Eagle; Brothers: Glen Walking Eagle, Curtis Walking Eagle; Sister: Lisa Walking Eagle; Daughters: Rochelle Walking Eagle and Carletta Walking Eagle; and Grandsons: Michael Walking Eagle and Joe Odom; Nephews: William Kazena, Jr., Neil Luger, Sr. and Kermit Walking Eagle, Jr. Pallbearers will be Benny Wayne Rowland, Curtis and Carl (CJ) Walking Eagle, Jr., Kermit, Bruce and Ron Walking Eagle. Honorary Pallbearers will be Leo Delorme, Rick Smith and the Four Winds Basketball team, Curtis Black, Joe and Clarise Lawrence, Paul Matheny, Demus McDonald, Winfield Chaske, Walking Eagle family from Montana, Joe Herman, Skip Longie, Sr., Frenchy Brown, Carl McKay, Larry Leventhal, Si Ironheart, Glenn Delorme, Mary Nickelson, Altru Staff on the 6th floor, Hospice nurse, and all friends and family that sent prayers and thoughts, food and beverages. If we forgot anyone it was not intentional and we apologize.
