Carmencita L. Old Rock
Carmen began her final journey on Thursday, October 20, 2016 at the Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, ND. She was 59 years old.
Carmen was born at Devils Lake Mercy Hospital on May 23, 1957, the youngest daughter of Leonard D. Old Rock- Martin and Irene T. (Brown) Martin. She began her life in Crowhill District, a member of the Cut Head Band of Dakota and lived most of her life on the Spirit Lake Dakota Reservation.
She attended the Little Flower Catholic Mission School at St. Michael, ND. She attended Spirit Lake School in Fort Totten and also Devils Lake Central High School. She continued her education at Ackers Business College in Grand Forks, ND.
Carmen enlisted in the United States Air Force and proudly served her country, receiving an honorable discharge in 1978.
Carmen worked at the Indian Affairs Commission in Bismarck, ND and was later employed with the Employment and Training Center in Devils Lake. She also worked at the BIA Law Enforcement Center and Spirit Lake Sioux Manufacturing Corp. in Fort Totten. Due to declining health she was unable to work the past several years.
Carmen enjoyed making Star Quilts and also going to BINGO where she was able to visit with friends and family and make new friends. She always treasured time spent with her children, grandchildren and brothers and other dear family members.
Carmen was a member of the Spirt Lake VFW Post #6547.
Carmen is survived by her three children and grandchildren, daughter Tina L. Martin and grandson Eric John Martin; son Reno Littleghost and granddaughter Haylee Littleghost; son Reco Littleghost and grandchildren Elijah, Xander, Landon, Jayme Jr., Isis and Madisyn Littleghost; adopted son WinterHawk Old Rock and grandchildren WinterHawk Jr., Nupa, Trella, Tatiyani, Skylar and Rylie Old Rock; brothers Darren G. Yankton, Grand Forks, ND and Robert Old Rock, Spirit Lake Nation; special friend Raynard Iceman.
She was preceded in death by her sons James Robert, Jules Robin and Jorge Littleghost; sister Wilma G. (Martin) Old Rock and Agnes R. (Martin) Old Rock; parents Leonard and Irene; grandparents James and Agnes Brown; long-time companion Stacy Littleghost; grandson Hayden Reno Littleghost and many many grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins.
The Wake for Carmen will be held on Thursday, October 27, 2016 beginning at 5:00 p.m. at the Fort Totten Recreation Center with a Rosary and Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. The procession to Fort Totten will leave at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday from the Spirit Lake Casino.
Mass of the Resurrection will be on Friday, October 28th at 10:00 a.m. at Seven Dolors Catholic Church, Fort Totten with Father Charles Leute OP celebrating the Mass. Carmen will be laid to rest in St. Jerome’s Cemetery, Crow Hill, ND.
Casket Bearers for Carmen will be Michael Stone of Grand Forks, Kelly Stone of St. Michael, Sam Cloud and Robert Cavanaugh of Fort Totten, Merrill IronHawk of St. Michael and Clint Keo of Crow Hill, Eric John Martin and WinterHawk L. Old Rock Jr.
Honorary Bearers will be Judy and Ava Graybear of Poplar, MT, Catalina (Terry) Herman, Myra Pearson and Betty Smith of Fort Totten, Julius Rainbow Jr., Germaine Littlewind and Family, Marilyn “Bubbles” Thomas and Family, Lorraine Greybear and Family, Goph, Benny and Mark Mudgett, Susie Fox, Marshall BlackLance, Nilus BlackLance Jr.,George Brown and Family, Lila Anderson and Family, Marty Alex and Family, Dennis Keo and Family and all of Carmen’s many friends and relatives.
