Mary Genevieve, the daughter of John Henry and Margaret Mae (McCormick) Blaufuss was born on June 24, 1922 at Devils Lake, ND. She was reared at Doyon, ND attending the Odessa Township School #1 and then graduating from Doyon High School in the class of 1940. She continued her education at Mayville State Teacher’s College. With her Teaching Certificate in hand, she taught at the Webster School for 6 years.
On June 20, 1949, Gen was united in marriage to John W. Broden at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Devils Lake. They established their home on the Broden farm, rural Starkweather where they lived, worked side by side and raised their family through the years. Gen and John wintered in Arizona for 27 years and for the past 8 years, have called Devils Lake home. Gen’s beloved John died on October 28th of this year.
Gen was always a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother. She had large gardens on the farm and enjoyed the whole process from planting, to canning and sharing produce with family and friends. She was an avid reader and whenever possible planned the day so as not to miss “As The World Turns” on television each weekday. She loved being a part of the Triangle Homemakers Club for many years.
Gen was a member of St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church of Webster and sang in the church choir. After the church closed, they joined Assumption of Mary at Starkweather and she was very active in the Altar Society and Catholic Daughters of the Americas. For the past eight years, she and John belonged to St. Joseph Catholic Church in Devils Lake.
Gen and John loved life on the farm, family vacations and spending time with their children and grandchildren. Our sadness is great at the loss of both our parents but the promise of eternal life brings us great joy in this most blessed, holy season of Christmas.
