Shirley Ann Stein, 76, passed away peacefully at the Devils Lake Good Samaritan Center on Wednesday, January 25, 2017.   Shirley was born on April 30, 1940 in Bismarck, ND to Harry and Cecilia (Czeczok) Tatley.  She spent her childhood growing up on Tatley Farms where her love for the outdoors, flowers and animals evolved.  She graduated from St Mary's Central High School in 1958.  Shirley attended The College of Saint Scholastica, in Duluth, MN, for one year before transferring to the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, ND.  Shirley was married to her high school sweetheart, Ray, on February 13, 1961 in Bismarck.  They moved to Springfield, MO where they started their family.  Wanting to return to their North Dakota roots, they moved to Minot in 1963 to continue their education.  Shirley received her degree in Education from Minot State Teachers College in 1967.  She taught first and second grades in Surrey, Beulah and Webster before joining Devils Lake Public Schools.  In 1987 she received her Masters in Reading Education from the University of North Dakota.  She was a Title I Reading Teacher until her retirement in 1999.  Shirley was a very devoted teacher and received many honors for her hard work including: Teacher of The Year, Honors for Excellence, Who's Who Among America's Teachers, Teacher of the Quarter, as well as an induction into the DLPSF Educator Hall of Fame.  Shirley was not only a loving wife, mother and grandmother, but also a kind and gentle person toward everyone she met.  She never forgot the students she taught and would greet them by name years after she had them in school.  She will be greatly missed by family and friends. Shirley is survived by her husband, Ray and children, Bryan of Horace, ND, Stacey (Scott) Schuler of San Antonio, TX, Jill (Bill) Kvasager of Grand Forks, ND and Steve (Stacie Reierson) of Devils Lake, ND; her six grandchildren: Ethan, Owen and Ashton Stein, Casey (Hannah) and Callie Schuler, and Megan (Dan) Essig; one great-grandchild: Isla Essig; sisters and brothers-in-law Donna (Mike) Myers of San Jose, CA, Marge Schulz of Hudson, WI, and Ted Hohner of San Diego, CA; former daugher-in-law Heidi Jelsing; many nieces, nephews, cousins and their families. She was preceded in death by her parents Harry and Cecilia, sister Mary Helen Hohner, brother-in-law Ed Schulz and in-laws Anton and Minnie Stein. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, February 1, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Devils Lake with the Very Reverend C.F. Wilhelm celebrating the Mass. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church on Tuesday, January 31st from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a Rosary, Scripture Service and time of sharing at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church on Wednesday one hour prior to the funeral Mass. Casket Bearers for Shirley will be Bryan Stein, Steve Stein, Ethan Stein, Scott Schuler, Casey Schuler and Bill Kvasager. Gift Bearers will be Ashton Stein, Owen Stein, Callie Schuler and Megan Essig Memorials may be directed to the Devils Lake Public School Foundation in memory of Shirley.
