Phyllis Ann Dahl, 79 of Devils Lake, ND passed away on Monday, February 6, 2017. Phyllis Ann Hoglund was born in Rhinelander, Wisconsin on April 6, 1937, the daughter of John and Elna (Johnson) Hoglund. The family then moved to Goshen, Indiana where Phyllis spent most of her childhood years. Both her parents died very young and when Phyllis was 16 years of age she moved to Pelican Rapids, Minnesota to be near her sisters Marilyn and Holly. She graduated from Pelican Rapids High School in 1955. After high school, Phyllis moved to Fargo, ND and worked at Northern School Supply as a secretary. In 1956, she met the love of her life and future husband, Robert, while he was a student at North Dakota State University. They were united in marriage December 30, 1956 in Pelican Rapids, MN and just recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Upon Bob’s graduation from college, they moved to Grafton, ND where he began work for the Soil Conservation Service. For seven years, they made Grafton their home until 1965 when his transfer brought them to Devils Lake, ND where they have lived ever since. In 1974, they decided to make farming their full time profession in both the Devils Lake area and his home country Adams and Park River. Through these years, Phyllis stood by Bob’s side as a partner in farm activities, and always a best friend. She was a loving and compassionate wife, mother and grandmother and devoted herself and time to her family. She took pride in her home, yard work and flower beds and was the kindest and most loving Mother to all of her children. She loved to cook meals and took pride in her baking. The holidays she loved to host and celebrate with her family will never be forgotten. Phyllis was an active home-makers club member for manty years and later enjoyed her regular lunch meetings with friends from that group. She enjoyed bowling in both Grafton and Devils Lake and also was a member of the Lake Region Curling Club and loved curling. She was also a member of the Sons of Norway. Phyllis loved to travel and take vacations. Many were with her immediate family and years later with her husband, Bob. She was happy to accomplish her goal of visiting all 50 states including Alaska and Hawaii. Some of these trips were by car, airplane and many were by tour bus. She loved to meet new people and on one bus tour, she met a dear friend Lois Schieffert from Sleepy Eye, Minnesota. Her ultimate travel experience was to tour Sweden, the homeland of her father, and meet cousins and relatives. Phyllis has been an active member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church for over 50 years and always felt very loyal to her church. She served as a Sunday school teacher, and held the offices of secretary, treasurer, vice president and president to the church council as well as numerous other church committees. One of her proudest achievements was her time spent on the kitchen remodeling committee and was very proud of the newly renovated kitchen. Phyllis is survived by her husband Robert and her children Craig (Michelle) Dahl, Park River, ND, Laurie (Jay) Johnson, Burlington, ND and Steven Dahl, Devils Lake. Grandchildren surviving from Laurie and Jay’s family are Bethany (Drew) Haner, Brianna Johnson (fiancé Jerick Hedges), Travis Johnson and Tanner Johnson. Grandchildren from Craig’s family are Jamie (Kyle) Shypkowski, Chris (Daniela) Dahl (mother Renae Foell) and step grandchildren Alicia Waind, Kayla (Erik) Samuelson and Sam (Brandi) Boehmer (mother Michelle) and seven great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother John (Joanne) Hoglund and her sister Marilyn (Grant) Scheer, sisters-in-law Helen (James) Hodgson and Jeanne (Richard) Lasch as well as several nieces and nephews. Preceding Phyllis in death are her parents John and Elna Hoglund, a sister Holly Dillerud and a brother-in-law Allen Dahl. Funeral Services for Phyllis will be held on Monday, February 13, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Devils Lake, ND with Reverend Jim Paulson officiating. Burial will be in the Devils Lake Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Sunday, February 12th from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. with a time of Prayer and Remembrance at 5:00 p.m. Visitation on Monday will be at the church one hour prior to the funeral service.
