James H. “Jim” Beatty, 96 years young, of Devils Lake formerly of Lakota, ND passed away on Sunday, February 19, 2017 at CHI, St. Alexius, Devils Lake Hospital. Funeral Services for Jim will be held next week on Tuesday, March 7, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Devils Lake with Reverend Tom Westcott officiating with Masonic Rites to follow. James Harlan, born Jan. 29, 1921 in Lakota, North Dakota to Cecil and Jesse (Langton) Beatty. Jim grew up on the family dairy farm with his sisters and brothers. He left Lakota to attend college at Kansas State University where he studied to be a writer and journalist. He graduated from Kansas State. Following college World War II broke out and he joined the Army Air Corps. He trained in secret radar operations in Grand Island, Nebraska where he met his wife Alice Jean Manners. They married and are survived by 3 children. Jim was a writer for an Omaha Newspaper, Division Manager for Clarke Floor Machine Company and lived in Grand Island, NE, Omaha, NE, also in Raytown Mo. and then resided in Cincinnati OH.for many years. Then lived in Devils Lake for the past 35 years. Jim was a 32 degree Mason (member of Euclid Lodge 21), he was an Ararat Shriner (the Kansas City, Mo. Chapter), he also was a member of the KEM Chanters for many years. He did many fund raisers for charitable groups in his Community and Lutheran Church, also including the Shrine Burn Hospital. He loved playing the Piano especially at his church and any where else he could tickle the ivories. He played the Clarinet with the Elk Community Band for many years. He often played at the Odd Fellows Nursing home and the Community center in town. He liked to entertain everyone and enjoyed the applause. He was playing piano in the hospital where he was recovering from pneumonia up until two days before he lost the battle. He was truly an Amazing Man. Jim is survived by his son Larry Beatty daughters Terri and Lois. He is also survived by his 5 grandchildren Joshua and Mckel (Terri Lee Hill), Jordan and Shannon (Diane Beatty) from Cincinnati OH also Jessica L Beatty (Lois Beatty). Jim was preceded in death by Alice Jean (Manners) Beatty, son Robert, long time companion Marge Saunders, siblings sisters, Betty LouVerne and Lovina and brothers, Claude (Buddy), Robert, and Bill. Jim’s ashes will be placed in the Beatty Burial Plot in Lakota Cemetery with Military Honors and family in the future as weather permits. Dad you will be truly missed!!
