Norma Lenora was born on November 10, 1916 at the home of her parents, Peder and Anna (Larson) Larson in Storlie Township, rural Hampden. She was reared and educated there and attended country schools there. Norma’s father died when she was very young, so she was raised by her mother at the home of her grandparents. She worked with her mother and grandparents on the farm until she met Earl W. Haugland and they were united in marriage on October 5, 1940 at Nekoma. They established their home on a farm in Billings Township, near Hampden where they farmed side by side and raised their children. They later owned and operated Haugland's Market and Haugland Service Station in Hampden. In 1974 they moved to Devils Lake and Norma worked in a Devils Lake fabric shop, worked as a seamstress for “Kelly’s” and later at Mercy Hospital for many years until she retired in 1982. On February 28, 2007, Norma’s dear husband, Earl passed away.
Norma continued to make Devils Lake her home where she was a member of Peace Lutheran Church and did many hours of volunteer work for the church and the community. She was a very talented seamstress and also enjoyed quilting. When you heard the word “lefse” you couldn’t help but think of Norma and delight in the memories of so many delicious home-cooked meals.
For Norma, faith and family were of the utmost importance and she had such great pride and joy in her children and grandchildren. Oh, how she was loved and she will be so greatly missed.
Norma is survived by her dear children: Gary Haugland and his wife, Mary of Devils Lake;
Linda Barnes of Darien, Georgia; Sandra Lunde and her husband, Ron of East Grand Forks, Minnesota and Wayne Haugland and his wife, Diana of Hampden.
