Josephine “Jo” C. Burckhard, 88 of Devils Lake, ND formerly of Boise, Idaho died on Friday, June 6, 2008 at Heartland Care Center, Devils Lake. Mass of Christian Burial for Jo will be held on Tuesday, June 10, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Devils Lake. Fr. Robert Pecotte will celebrate the Mass and burial will be in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Monday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Serving as Honorary Bearers for Jo will be all of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Reading the Scriptures will be Kevin Burckhard Gift Bearers will be Jerome, Kristi, Averi and Addison Ziegler Music will be provided by Tom Burckhard and JoDee Lagein Josephine Caroline was born on November 17, 1919 on the farm near Brinsmade, ND, the daughter of Gerald and Marie (Kain) Huebschwerlen. Jo was reared and educated in the Brinsmade/Minnewaukan area, graduating from Minnewaukan High School. She attended Business School in Bismarck. From there, Jo accepted a job in Washington DC. Jo was united in marriage to J.W. “Bill” Burckhard on November 1, 1942 in St. Matthew’s Cathedral in Washington DC. After Bill’s discharge from the service, they returned to Devils Lake where they made their home, worked and raised their family. After all the children graduated from high school, Jo accepted a transfer from Devils Lake to Boise, Idaho in her job with the US Fish and Wildlife Service. After 30 years, she returned to Devils Lake. While living in Boise, Jo was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and after moving back to Devils Lake was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Jo was a talented artist with interests in painting, knitting, crocheting and gardening. She was also an especially talented seamstress. For other pastimes, Jo enjoyed playing cards and belonged to Bridge Clubs in Devils Lake and Boise and was also a whiz a cross word puzzles. In her younger years, she was a member of the local Homemakers. Jo was a loving, devoted wife and mother and was so proud of all of the children and grandchildren. Her love will remain forever in our hearts. Jo is survived by her children: John Burckhard and his wife, Marilyn of Devils Lake Bonnie LaBarre and her husband, Lee of Webster, ND Bruce Burckhard and his wife, Pat also of Devils Lake Barb Herda of Lakota, ND Jackie Stromberg of Boise Terry Burckhard also of Boise Eleven Grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren Brother: John Huebschwerlen of San Leandro, California Many nieces, nephews and their families also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bill in 1988; brother, Warren Huebschwerlen; sisters, Kathleen Okerman and Geraldine Abeel; son-in-law, Tom Herda and great grandson, Lane Herda.
