God bless you all. Peter Paul Black was born on July 19, 1943 at Fort Totten, ND the son of Charles and Josephine (Baker) Black Sr. He grew up in St. Michael and graduated 8th grade from Little Flower School, St. Michael. He then attended 9th grade at Fort Totten where he met the girl he would eventually marry. He attended high school in Maddock and received his GED from Little Hoop Community College. Peter was united in marriage to Lea Brunelle on July 15, 1963 in Aberdeen, South Dakota. They lived for a time in Aberdeen where Peter worked as a carpenter. They returned to the Spirit Lake Nation and would make the St. Michael area their home where they lived, worked and raised their family through the years. Peter began working for the Spirit Lake Tribe 37 years ago. He worked with Head Start for a few years then began with the Employment and Training Program where he continued his dedication to his work until the time of his death. He was a hard working, well respected individual by all who knew him. Peter enjoyed bowling, fishing, boxing and billiards. Every summer, Peter looked forward to following his son-in-law, Perry racing thoroughbred horses. He followed him thorough out North Dakota, South Dakota and Canada. Peter was most famous for giving all of his dear friends and family “nicknames.” His favorite “hangout” was the casino, where he had a chance to visit with his many friends and relatives. However, you would never find Peter at the casino if his grandchildren were involved in any activity. His favorite people were his grandchildren and he was devoted to them and wanted to be at all of their activities as their biggest fan.
