Katherine J. Dick, 93 of Munich, ND died on Friday, June 17, 2005 at the Towner County Medical Center, Cando, ND. Funeral Services for Katherine will be held on Wednesday, June 22, 2005 at 10:00 a.m. at Salem Mennonite Church, Munich. Rev. Bruce Dick, Pastor, Bethel Evangelical Free Church, Devils Lake will officiate and burial will be in the East Salem Cemetery, rural Munich. Friends may call at the Gilbertson Funeral Home Chapel, Devils Lake on Tuesday from 1:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation on Wednesday will be at the church one hour prior to the funeral service. Serving as Honorary Casket Bearers will be, Katherine’s Granddaughters, Joan Klein, Karen Majerus, Ellen Sondreal, Susan Schulz, Kim Hackenberg, Gail Burnham, Kathy Syrstad, Marla Ingebretson, Gina Braathen, Treva Miller, Angie Snavely, Sara Dick and Ann Dick and also David Schulz, Gina Towers, Mike Hackenberg, Gregg Burnham, Deb Braathen, Marty Syrstad, Chad Miller, Greg Majerus, Janene Sand and Tammy Sand Active Casket Bearers will be, Lynn Klein, Phil Sondreal, Brad Towers, Dean Braathen, Aaron Braathen, Shawn Sand, Lynn Sand and Chris Snavely. Music will be provided by Phil Sondreal, Soloist; Carol Hoffman, Joan Heppner, Cynthia Spenst and Arlys Wiens, Ladies Quartet with Maxine Janzen and Gladys Hoffman, Instrumentalists Katherine J. Janzen was born on May 16, 1912 on a farm at rural Calio, ND, the daughter of Jacob J. and Anna (Wiens) Janzen. She attended Munich Public School and worked at home on the family farm. On October 18, 1934, Katherine was united in marriage to Albert C. Dick in the Salem Mennonite Church. They established their home on a farm southeast of Munich where they lived, worked and raised their family. In 1967 they began spending the winter months in Mesa, Arizona and this continued through the years. In 1976, they moved into Munich and continued to live there the summer months. Albert died on October 27, 1988. Katherine was a member of Salem Mennonite Church and was very active on several of the committees of the church and also the various activities of the church. Katherine had many hobbies and pastimes. She enjoyed doing crafts and handiwork including embroidery. She made each of her children a special embroidered quilt. Other projects included pansy paper toll pictures and again she shared these beautiful creations with her children and grandchildren. She was an avid gardener, canning her produce and continuing to do canning each summer of meats, fruits and vegetables. She could put together a feast for family and friends by just going to her pantry of canned goods. She was also an excellent baker, especially known for her “cinnamon twists” and made it her mission to bake cookies for everyone she knew as a special gift from her. She loved spending time with her family and many friends and making sure they never left her home without having a cup of coffee and homemade treat. Katherine is survived by her loving children: Eileen Aafedt, Munich Gloria Towers and her husband, Ken, Grand Forks Doris Braathen and her husband, Gene, Starkweather Bertha Sand and her husband, Ervin, Galesburg, ND Albert Dick and his wife, Sandy, Munich Eighteen Grandchildren Forty Great Grandchildren Several Nieces and Nephews also survive Katherine was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son-in-law, Wayne Aafedt; brothers, John, Hank, Jacob and Dave Janzen; sisters, Elizabeth Dick and a sister in infancy.
