Harvey L. Altringer, 89, Henderson, NV, formerly of Devils Lake, ND, died on February 5, 2008.
Funeral services for Harvey will be at 2:00PM on Saturday April 26th at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Devils Lake. Rev. Harold Ovre will officiate, burial will be at the Devils Lake Cemetery. Military Honors will be accorded by the Neathery-Simensen Post #756, Devils Lake Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Lake Region Honor Guard, Camp Grafton.
Honorary Bearers will be Harvey’s grandchildren.
Music will be provided by Tom Rime, soloist and Lynda Pearson, organist
Eulogy by Steve Altringer
Harvey Altringer was born April 9, 1918 on a farm home north of Nome, ND, the son of Louis John and Hannah (Wilhelmson) Altringer. He grew up at Nome and Valley City where he graduated from high school. His father died when he was 10 years old, and his mother remarried, when he was in high school to Melvin Brandvold.
Harvey married Dorothy L. Frederick, Aug 15, 1938 in St. Paul, MN. The couple returned to North Dakota living in various cities until they settled at Devils Lake. Harvey and Dorothy had 10 children.
Harvey enlisted in the Army and served at Fort Snelling until his discharge in 1945. He then spent 21 years working in the Red Owl and Leevers grocery stores. The family then moved to Minot, ND, where he worked at the Minot Air Force Base Commissary starting as the manager of the meat department and eventually becoming and retiring as the commissary manager. After retiring, the couple moved to Grand Forks, ND. During their retirement years they enjoyed traveling and visiting family. In 2000 Harvey moved to Henderson, NV, where he resided until his death.
Harvey was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Devils Lake and Zion Lutheran Church in Minot, a life member of the Disabled America Veterans, a member of the Grand Forks American Legion and a charter member of the Devils Lake Eagles. He started the Devils Lake teen canteen and served as the president of their board for 5 years. Harvey was president of the Devils Lake band board, a member of the Devils Lake quarterback club, baseball club, boxing club and assistant chairman of the installation of the new lighting at the Devils Lake baseball park.
Harvey enjoyed hunting, fishing, watching sports and reading. He was very active in attending all the events of his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his daughters- Myrna (Tom) Peterson of Devils Lake, ND and Joan Durbin of Sun City, AZ; His sons- Lyle of Devils Lake, ND, Larry (Diane) of Erskine, MN, Gerald (Linda) of Sun City AZ, Robert (Kathy) of Crookston, MN, Richard (Kerry) of Storm Lake, IA, Allen (Joanne) of White Oak, GA, Jay (Dyanne) of Minot, ND and Steven of Garrison, ND, 20 grandchildren, 28 great grand children and Harvey’s special friend Annabel Kane of Henderson, NV.
He was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy of 62 years, his parents Louis and Hannah (Wilhelmson) Altringer, his step father Melvin Brandvold, his granddaughter Tracy Altringer and his grandsons Jonathan Altringer and Cole Altringer,.
Memorials may be made to the Altringer Family Endowment Fund at the Lake Region State College in Devils Lake, ND.
