Eva “Lena” Bertsch, 89, of Devils Lake, ND, died Wednesday, December, 12, 2007 at Heartland Care Center, Devils Lake. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, December 15, 2007 in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Devils Lake. Fr. Dale Kinzler will celebrate the Mass and burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Friday from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with a Rosary and Scripture Service at 6:30 p.m. Visitation on Saturday will be in the Mother Theresa Hall at the church one hour prior to the funeral Mass. Serving as Casket Bearers will be Eugene Kraft, Allen Kraft, Donnie Kraft, Chad Rader, Corey Rader, Darin Bertsch, Justin Bertsch and Todd Bertsch. Reading the Scriptures will be Christopher Edland and Lisa Dosch Gift Bearers will be Patsy Kraft, Amy Lynn Bertsch and Jessica Bertsch Music will be provided by Patty Cote Eva Magdalena Schall was born on January 22, 1918 at Rugby, ND the daughter of John and Caroline (Miller) Schall. She was reared in the Crary/Doyon, ND area and attended school in Doyon. Lena was united in marriage to Alex Bertsch on April 15, 1940 at Balta, ND. They first established their home on a farm in Balta and later farmed in Starkweather, Crary, Bartlett and St. Michael, ND. In 1953, they moved to Warwick where they farmed for 15 years. While living in Warwick, Lena worked as a cook at the Warwick School. Alex died on December 28, 1968. In 1969, Lena moved to Devils Lake where she made her home through the years. She was employed at Mercy Hospital in the laundry and mending department and also did cleaning at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Lena also volunteered at the Good Samaritan Center for many years doing sewing and mending for the residents. In 2002, Lena retired but continued to make Devils Lake her home. Lena was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and also of St. Valentine Circle which later became the St. Theresa Circle. Lena leaves a legacy of strong faith and her everlasting love for all members of her dear family. She will be forever missed and forever loved. Lena is survived by her children, Agnes Kraft and her husband, Edward of Devils Lake; Joseph Bertsch and his wife, Eldonna of Apple Valley, California Raymond Bertsch and his wife Debra, Devils Lake Bernadine Ehnert and her husband, Jim of Maddock, ND 12 Grandchildren: Eugene (Loretta) Kraft, Patsy Kraft, Allen (Lisa) Kraft, Donnie (Linda) Kraft, Lisa (Jeff) Dosch, Brenda Bertsch, Darin (Shannon) Bertsch, Todd Bertsch, Justin Bertsch, Amy Lynn Bertsch, Chad (Melissa) Rader and Corey Rader. 18 Great Grandchildren: Monique Kraft, Ariel Kraft, Christopher Edland, Jessy Kraft, Amanda Kraft, Brandy Kraft, Macie Kraft, Lacie Kraft, Hunter Dosch, Jacinda Schell, Sage Bertsch, Jordan Bertsch, Shelby Stevenson, Mya Stevenson, Alex Bertsch, Jessica Bertsch, Calder Bertsch and Gavin Rader. One Great Grandson, Otto Edland Brother: Bert Schall of Devils Lake Sisters: Barbara Dodgson, Devils Lake; Annie Holler, Crary, ND; Rose Fossen, Maddock; Katie Reynen, Oklahoma; Veronica (Nick) Leiphon, Devils Lake; Eleanor Jacobson, California and Esther (Sid) Mason of Utah. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Alex; 3 sons in infancy, Lawrence, Wendell and John; brothers, Lawrence, Frank, Wendell and Jack Schall.
