Myrthle LeOna Rognlie was born on October 4, 1916, to Esmond pioneer nurseryman, Paul Rognlie and Juliana (Jenson) Rognlie. She attended Esmond Public Schools and Mayville State College. While she was teaching at the Quarve School in the Viking community, south of Maddock, she met Gerhard Faleide who was singing in the Viking Church Choir. Their romance started when he brought a Hershey’s candy bar to Myrthle at her school. Myrthle and Gerhard were united in marriage on December 25, 1938. They made their home and raised their family on their farm in Viking. After Gerhard died in 1984, Myrthle retired from teaching school in New Rockford and moved to Devils Lake to be closer to her son, Ronald and his family.
Myrthle had many interests. She loved composing and presenting “readings” for events in the community. The lights were on all night at Myrthle’s house; she was an “owl” who preferred to stay up all night, reading and watching political programs and sports events on television.
A lover of education, she earned her Bachelor’s degree from Mayville State College in 1974. This degree was beneficial to her as she pursued one of the great loves of her life-teaching. During her retirement, she enjoyed traveling, especially to England.
Myrthle is survived by her children,
