John was born on November 7, 1946 at Fort Totten, ND, the son of John Littlewind Sr. and Irene Sherman Littlewind. He was raised in the Fort Totten area and attended school at Fort Totten and St. Michael, ND. He also attended school at Wahpeton, ND and Flandreau, South Dakota. John worked at Fort Totten for Sioux Manufacturing Corporation, Dakota Tribal Industries and at the Spirit Lake Housing Corporation. He also worked various construction jobs throughout North Dakota. John’s love of horses drew him to work on local area farms with horses and livestock where he became good friends with the local farmers and ranchers. He also raised his own horses and loved attending rodeos, parades and trail rides, visiting with his many friends. In his younger years, John worked with his uncles and grandfather, Joe Littlewind raising and breaking horses and attended rodeos with his young cousins and nephews. In his later years, during his free time, John made handcrafted miniatures saddles, bridles, horse carriages and buggies and became an artist in that field. Much of his handcrafted items are now owned by local people. Due to his illness, since June of 1998, John has resided at the Heartland Care Center up until the time of his death.
In 1968, John married Joanne Redfox. Of that marriage there are five children, Karen, Justine, June, Jolene and Jay Littlewind. He later had three more children, Jaclyn and Ashley Littlewind and Jessica McKay.
A Cowboy’s Prayer: Heavenly Father, we pause, mindful of the many blessings you have bestowed upon us. We ask that you be with us at this rodeo and we pray that you will guide us in the arena of life. We don’t ask for special favors; we don’t ask to draw around a chute-fightin’ horse or to never break a barrier. Nor do we ask for all daylight runs or not to draw a steer that won’t lay. Help us Lord, to live our lives in such a manner that when we make that last inevitable ride to the country up there where the grass grows lush, green and stirrup high, and the water runs cool, clear and deep, that you, as our last Judge, will tell us that our entry fees are paid.
