Myrtle C. Eckes, 95 of Devils Lake formerly of Edmore, ND died on Wednesday, November 28, 2007 at the Good Samaritan Center, Devils Lake. Funeral Services for Myrtle will be held on Saturday, December 1, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Devils Lake. Rev. Jamie Desai will officiate and burial will be in the Edmore Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Friday from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with the family present from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Visitation on Saturday will be at the church one hour prior to the funeral service. Serving as Casket Bearers for Myrtle will be Derrick Hassett, Dennis Eckes, Daryl Eckes, Perry Eckes, Cory Eckes and Todd Eckes. Myrtle Catherine was born on June 15, 1912, the daughter of Ole and Emma Charlotte (Soder) Haugen at Derrick, ND where she was reared and educated. Myrtle was united in marriage to Leo Eckes at Derrick where they established their home and lived, worked and raised their family. Leo died on April 9, 1944. Myrtle continued to make Derrick her home until 1952. Myrtle then worked for a time in Lakota, caring for the invalid wife of Mr. Graham. In 1956, Myrtle moved to Devils Lake. She was employed at the North Dakota State School for the Deaf as a Dorm Councilor until she retired in 1972. She continued to make her home in Devils Lake and in August of 2004 she moved to the Good Samaritan Center. She was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. Myrtle was an artist when she had a needle and thread in her hand and she embroidered 100’s of dish towels for family and friends. She was also an artist with flowers and had many beautiful flower gardens. Even when her mobility was so limited she made sure she had flowers growing. As a very young widow, Myrtle devoted her life to providing and caring for her children. She treasured each one of them and took pride in her large family of grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. There was such determination, dedication and love in everything that Myrtle did. That is the legacy she has left us all and we shall hold our memories of Myrtle forever in our hearts. Myrtle is survived by her children: William Eckes and his wife, Doris of Devils Lake Doris Buckingham and her husband, Wallace of Fargo Geneva Jarvis of Kalispell, Montana Charlotte Sherve of Grand Forks Daughters-In-Law: Maxine Eckes, Edmore Mina Eckes, Devils Lake Sharon Eckes, Grand Forks Twenty-Six Grandchildren Fifty Great Grandchildren Many Great Great Grandchildren She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leo; sons, Donald, Duane and Roland Eckes; brother, Orville Haugen.
