Lois Hefti was born November 6, 1918 on the family homestead in South Minnewaukan Township, near Devils Lake. She was the daughter of Lena Victoria (Olson) and Edgar Hefti. Lois attended the country grade school near her home, South Minnewaukan #1 and graduated from Devils Lake High School, 1936. Her first job was in the Agriculture Adjustment Office administered by the County Extension Service, helping farmers with crop measurements and registration. She attended business college in Seattle Washington for a 6 month program of study and returned to the AA Office.
With encouragement from her employer she enrolled at NDSU, graduating with a degree in home economics in 1942. Her first teaching job in Drake, ND was interrupted by a call for defense workers. Lois traveled to Chicago for radio school training but got off the elevator on the wrong floor ended up in Air Traffic Control School. She worked in the control tower at William Mitchell Field in Chicago for two years.
She married Humphrey Lloyd Jones, of Webster, ND, in June 11, 1943 . While her husband served overseas Lois worked as an extension agent at Bottineau County. Upon his return they began farming near Webster. They raised three children, Laurel, Lawson and Hayden Lee. Lloyd died unexpectedly in December 1965. Lois continued to operate the farm with her children until she retired in 1980. Lois completed a Masters Degree in 1970 and worked part time for the ND Extension Service for several years.
For 30 years Lois served as a 4-H leader, spending countless hours helping youth develop leadership skills. She was an avid horticulturalist, well known for her flower gardens and the bouquets she brought to church and family gatherings. She was active in many community organizations including Ramsey County Farm Bureau, Pioneer Daughters, Lake Region Heritage Center, Swedish Heritage Society and American Association of University Women. She served on the Agriculture Consultation board for NDSU and the board responsible for establishing the rural water system in the greater Lake Region. Always an advocate of education, Lois served on boards and committees involved in planning for Lake Region State College’s current campus and was a part-time instructor. In later years she regularly enrolled in classes at Lake Region State College and encouraged others to do likewise. Lois loved to travel and especially enjoyed agriculture-focused trips with the Outstanding Farmers of America. Lois and Lloyd were selected for membership in this elite agriculture fraternity in 1955. She was active in the Webster Chapel and Westminster Presbyterian church.
