Romona Bernadette (Volk) Crowell, 61, passed away February 18, 2009 at Mercy Hospital. She was born October 5, 1947 to Mary (Kraft) and Martin Volk in Devils Lake.
Memorial services will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 21, 2009 in the Gilbertson Funeral Home Chapel. Her family requests that family and friends in attendance bring a special story and/or picture about Romona and how she touched their life.
Romona was born October 5, 1947 to Martin and Mary (Kraft) Volk in Devils Lake.
She attended school at Crary, Devils Lake, and Lake Region Community College. She lived in California for a time, before traveling throughout the United States. Her only regret was never getting to Alaska.
She married Bud Crowell November 19, 1971, and divorced him in the spring of 1988.
Over the years, she has worked at Red Owl, the Good Samaritan Center, Dairy Queen, manager of Daklo Manor, did Home Care for the elderly, been a homemaker as well as ran a home-based craft business. The job she took the most pride in was serving as a bus transit driver for Devils Lake. She earned several awards for excellence at different Bus Fairs.
Romona was preceded in death by her father and has now gone on to watch over her special adopted boy “Pooh” (Harley Schwind) who passed away several years ago.
Romona will be missed and remembered by her children Karlene Clark (Terry) of Grand Forks, ND and Stephanie Crowell-Goeser (Brian) of Munich, ND; mother, Mary Volk of Devils Lake; sisters Rita Kraft and Cathy Olson of Devils Lake, ND; brother David Volk of Westerville, OH; all the friends she’s adopted as family over the year; and her special “adopted” granddaughter, Tristin Schwind.
