Derek “Fuji” E. Longie, Canté Wasté Hoksina (Good Hearted Boy) 36 of Fort Totten, ND died on Tuesday, January 27, 2009 at a friend’s home in Fort Totten. A Wake for Derek will be held at the Tokio Recreation Center, rural Tokio on Monday, February 2, 2009 beginning at 5:00 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 8:00 p.m. The Funeral Service for Derek will be on Tuesday, February 3rd at 10:00 a.m. also at the Tokio Recreation Center. Pastor Larry Thiele will officiate and burial will be in the Dakotah Oyate Luthean Cemetery. The procession to the Recreation Center will leave from Wal-Mart on Monday at 4:00 p.m. Serving as Casket Bearers for Derek will be Gary Longie Jr., Robert Green, Fabian Lohnes, Elijah Feather, Tony Auginaush, Bruce “John” Auginaush, Henry Neeland and Jack Thompson Jr. Honorary Bearers will be Manuel Littlewind, Raynard Iceman, Glen Wallace, Franklin Spotted Bird, Lisa Peoples, Willis Herald, David Longie, Amanda Jerome, Nicole Longie, Kara Longie, Jack Thompson Sr., Melinda Auginaush, Michael Neeland and William Stevens, Sheldon Black, Brandon Black, Bennett Black, Bill Black, Claude Black, Carletta Walking Eagle, Roshelle Walking Eagle, and all of Derek’s dear family and many friends. Derek Elliot Longie was born on February 6, 1972 at Devils Lake, ND the son of Jerry and Sherry (Taylor) Longie. He lived in the Fort Totten area for several years then moved with his family to Minnesota. He attended school in Warwick and while living in Minnesota attended Bagley High School. After high school, Derek worked in the Minneapolis area at various jobs, including 12 years with Jack Thompson. He returned to North Dakota and worked as a roofer for Glen Wallace. He also worked for several area farmers. Derek was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying nature and beauty of the earth. He loved hunting, fishing and swimming. He loved all the family outings, especially those that included ricing, leeching and a great family barbeque to end the day. Derek also had a passion for cars and loved to work on cars with his Dad. The most important job to Derek was helping people. He was always ready to lending a helping hand to anyone. He will be so dearly missed by his family and friends and we will hold his memory in our hearts forever. Derek is survived by his mother, Sherry Yvonne Taylor Longie of Fort Totten Brothers: Waylon Longie, Curtis Longie and Jerome Neeland Sisters: Angela (Jesse) Neeland-Gelling, Cheyenne Neeland and Amy Redfox Nieces: Mercedes Gagnon and Kaylee Neeland Nephews: Jarrick Jerome Jr., Jerome Neeland Jr., Carter Neeland, Terrance Neeland, Kainon Neeland, Zach Neeland and Jeremiah Neeland. Adopted Mother: Sharon Neeland Aunts: LaVonne Feather of Warwick, Donna Stevens of Iowa and Wilma Longie, Montana Uncles: Gary Longie and Kenneth Longie of Tokio. Grandmothers: Sonya Knox, Anita Bear, Belinda Longie and Doris Longie: Grandfathers: Alvin Bear and Folomon Ross Derek was preceded in death by his father, Jerry Longie; paternal grandparents, Donald and Lucille Longie, maternal grandmother, Betty Taylor and grandmother, Freanette Neeland and nephew, Jared Neeland- Auginaush.
