Phillip John Young, 64 of the Fort Totten/Oberon, ND area died early Monday morning, January 19, 2009 at Heartland Care Center in the loving care of his daughter and Mercy Hospice.
A Wake Service for Phillip will be held at the Crow Hill Recreation Center, rural Fort Totten today beginning at 5:00 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 8:00 p.m. The Procession to Crow Hill Recreation Center will leave from Wal-Mart at 4:00 p.m. today.
Funeral Services will also be held at Crow Hill Recreation Center on Friday, January 23, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. Fr. Charles Leute, O.P. and Deacon Tony McDonald will officiate with burial in St. Thomas Episcopal Cemetery, rural Fort Totten.
All drum groups are welcome and other music will be provided by Tony and Vina McDonald.
Serving as Casket Bearers for Phillip will be Vince Hinojos, Darcy Longie, Chris Nelson Jr., Marshall P. Longie, Jr., Anthony Longie, William Demarce, Marshall J. Longie and Ryan Longie.
Honorary Bearers will be Pat Walking Eagle, Cynthia Lindquist, Gloria Green, Paul and Joann Yankton, Clara Brown, Lee Jeanotte, Charlie Morin, Jim Lynner, Jane Lambrose, Sandra Miller, Bruce and Penny Walking Eagle, Jeannie Charboneau, Robert Charboneau, Greg Green, Sally McKay, Delemma Greywater, Bob and Euretta McKay, Al McKay, Bruce McKay, Chuck and Mary Trottier, Joanna Dubois, Sandra McDonald, Kenny and Beverly Greywater, Bernice Cavanaugh-John, Carl and Janice McKay and Betty Morin.
Phillip John Young was born on May 3, 1944 in Fort Totten, ND to Martin and Mercie (Jerome) Young. He then moved to California where he married Deloris Lara and they had two children, David John and Rosemary Christine. In 1971, he married Janice Dubois and they had a child, Roxann.
Phillip received his GED in 1984 from Little Hoop Community College. Phillip worked for Paul’s Gas and Oil and also for Fort Totten Public School as a bus driver. He served on the Board of Regents for Cankdeska Cikana Community College, was a member of the Spirit Lake Tribal Election Committee and the Spirit Lake Tribe Solid Waste Committee. He was also a member of the National Indian Health Diabetes Prevention Committee and worked for the Spirit Lake Diabetes Wellness Center as a Health Promotional Aid.
He was always willing to help out in the community to make the reservation a better place. He enjoyed working on cars, shooting pool and playing bar bingo. He was the family member who kept in contact with other family members who lived out of state. He will be greatly missed by all those who knew him.
Phillip is survived by his son: David John of California; Daughters: Rosemary of California, Roxann (James), Tamera and Amy all of Fort Totten.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Mercie; sisters, Tina and Marcie; aunts, Alvina, Christina, Loretta and Emma; uncles, Leonard and John; nephews, Scott and Joel and several cousins.
