David entered the North Dakota National Guard, serving his country from 1951 to 1952 with the 47th Division Tank Company. David was united in marriage to Lila Alvestad on July 19, 1952 in Alabama. After their marriage they moved to Montana for several years and David worked at a gas station/tire shop. In 1958, the family moved to Doyon and David began farming and he would continue as a steward of the land until his death. David also was a guide to fishermen for the Perch Patrol for the past 13 years. He was proud to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Lake Region Anglers Association in 2007. David was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Lake Region Anglers and the Rundell-Holicky American Legion Post #21 of Lakota.
