John "Jack" Charles Yakish

John “Jack” C. Yakish, 85 of Devils Lake formerly of Sarles, ND died Sunday, October 5, 2008 at Mercy Hospital, Devils Lake. Mass of Christian Burial for Jack will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Devils Lake on Wednesday, October 8, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. Fr. Dale Kinzler will celebrate the Mass and burial will be in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery. Military Honors will be accorded by the Sarles American Legion Post #276 and the Lake Region Honor Guard of Camp Grafton. Visitation will be held at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Tuesday, (today) from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with a Rosary and Scripture Service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation on Wednesday will be at the church one hour prior to the funeral Mass. Serving as Casket Bearers for Jack will be his grandson, TJ Yakish and step grandchildren, Kyle McConnell, Peter B. Schuler, Julie Cokley, Janelle Schefter and Jodi Gangl. Reading the Sacred Scriptures will be Jim Schuler. Gift Bearers will be Cody Gangl, Megan Gangl and Wyatt Schuler. Music will be provided by JoDee Lagein and Peter A. Hager John Charles was born on April 14, 1923 at St. Paul, Minnesota, the son of Joseph and Mildred “Hertl” Yakish. He was reared and educated in the Calio area. He worked in the Calio area until he enlisted in the US Navy on March 4, 1942. He served his country during World War II in the South Pacific as an Electrician’s Mate First Class aboard the USS Coos Bay. He was honorably discharged on December 15, 1945. After his discharge, he returned to the Calio and Munich area and worked for Schuler’s Hardware. On June 15, 1954, Jack was united in marriage to Irene (Gartner) Schuler at Calio. They established their home in Sarles where they owned and operated Jack’s Bar until April of 1976. They continued to make their home in Sarles where Jack was very active in the community. In 1993, they moved to Devils Lake where Jack was very involved in the Senior Meal Program. Jack was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Sarles American Legion Post #276 and the Sarles City Council. Jack lived a life of service and dedication to his family, his country, his home and his community. Jack is survived by his son, Joseph “Joe” Yakish and his wife, Connie of Hill City, Kansas Step Daughter: Gladys Olson of Osseo, Minnesota Step Son: Donald Schuler and his wife, Katherine of Devils Lake Step Daughter-In-Law: Beverly Schuler also of Devils Lake Grandson: Thomas J. “TJ” (April) Yakish of Ness City, Kansas Step Grandchildren: Cindy Robb, Debbie Cardinal, Terry Olson, Douglas Olson, Julie Cokley, Jodi Gangl, Peter B. Schuler, Lynn Mikkelsen, Janelle Schefter, Sherry McConnell, Eva Schaaf, Mary Ellen Etter and LeeAnn Lipelt. Great Grandchildren: Michael, Venessa, John and Emma Yakish Many Step Great Grandchildren Special Aunt: Dolores Hertl of Devils Lake Jack was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Irene on August 6, 2007; son, John A. Yakish; granddaughter, Angel Yakish; step daughter, Lois Mikkelsen; step son, Peter E. Schuler; step grandchildren, Lisa Schuler and Kelly Mikkelsen and brothers, Leo, Alphonse and Teddy Yakish.
