Lawrence “Mike” T. Shipley, 94 of Grand Forks, ND formerly of Devils Lake, ND died on Sunday, July 26, 2009 at Valley ElderCare Center in Grand Forks.
Mass of Christian Burial for Mike will be held on Saturday, August 1, 2009 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Devils Lake. Fr. Duaine Cote will celebrate the Mass and burial will be in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery. Military Honors will be accorded by the Neathery-Simensen Post #756, Devils Lake Veterans of Foreign Wars and the North Dakota Military Funeral Honors.
Visitation will be held at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Friday, July 31st from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a Rosary and Scripture Service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation on Saturday will be at the church one hour prior to the funeral Mass.
Lawrence Thomas was born in Flora, ND to David and Sarah Ann (Simon) Shipley on January 29, 1915. He moved to Michigan City, Indiana with his parents in 1924 where he was raised and attended school.
In 1933, he moved back to Devils Lake and worked for Howard Maher on the Maherwood Dairy Farm and Telephone Company. In 1936, he went to work for the Fairmont Creamery. He was united in marriage to Frances M. Sattler on February 29, 1940. Frances passed away on April 11, 1990.
He served in the United States Navy from 1944-1946 on the USS Zellars DD777 during World War II. He is a life member of the V.F.W. On his return to the city, he went back to work at Fairmont Creamery until he retired.
He is survived by one son, Dale and his wife Shirley Hein of Niles, Michigan, as well as two grandchildren: Gwen and husband Kirk Hocker, and Jeffrey and his wife Catrina Hein: four great grandchildren and one sister, Angeline Fries of Michigan City, Indiana.
Mike was preceded in death byhis parents, David and Sarah Ann Shipley, wife Frances Shipley, four brothers: Ernest, William, Orville, and George Shipley: five sisters: Florence Summers, Mary Zahn, Myrtle Blake, Stella Rudolph and Anna Belue, and one grandchild, Julie Hein.
