Gordon N. Burdick, 87 of Devils Lake, ND died Monday evening June 15, 2009, at Heartland Care Center in the loving care of his family.
Funeral Services for Gordon will be held on Friday, June 19, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake, ND. with Fr. Dale Kinzler officiating.
Graveside Services will be held at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, ND on Monday, June 22, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. Military Honors will be accorded by the Neathery-Simensen Post #756, Devils Lake Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Lake Region Honor Guard, Camp Grafton.
Visitation will be held at the Gilbertson Funeral Home on Thursday from 1:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. and on Friday from 9:00 a.m. until time of service.
Serving as Casket Bearers for Gordon will be his grandsons, Patrick Moos, Josh Moos, Clay Brosz, Marc Burdick, Jon Burdick, Jacob Burdick, Jason Burdick and Zachary Burdick and family friends, Raymond Jetty and Steve Jetty.
Honorary Bearers will be all of Gordon’s Granddaughters
Gordon N. Burdick was born on July 19, 1921, rural Ramsey County, ND, the son of Ralph L. and Lucy E. (Howard) Burdick. He was reared and educated on Graham’s Island and in the Minnewaukan area. Gordon entered the United States Army on October 30, 1942 at Fort Snelling, Minnesota and served his country during World War II, stationed in the South Philippine and Ryukyus Islands. He was honorably discharged on January 14, 1946 at Fort Lewis, Washington with the rank of Technical Sergeant and was the recipient of the Bronze Star Medal.
Gordon was united in marriage to Jeannette Berg on September 28, 1946 at Minnewaukan where they established their home. They lived for a short time in Medford, Oregon then returned to the Devils Lake area. Gordon served as the Benson County Sheriff for several years then was employed at Sioux Manufacturing until retiring. In their retirement years, Gordon and Jeannette went to the Bighorn Mountains and worked for the U.S. Forest Service as volunteers the summers of 1988-1997. In 2001, they moved to Jamestown, ND and after Jeannette passed away on February 27, 2002, Gordon returned to Devils Lake where he lived until his death.
Gordon was a member of the American Legion for over 50 years and was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
In his younger years, Gordon was a gardener extraordinaire and the beauty and bounty of his gardens were a sight to see. He loved to watch bull riding and this served as good company for him in the later years. Gordon had a great sense of humor and he was able to share this and pass this on to his family.
Gordon is survived by his loving children: Kathy Moos and her husband, Ralph of Aberdeen, South Dakota; Robert Burdick of Fargo, ND; Judy Brosz and her husband, Tom of Bismarck, ND and Bill Burdick and his wife, Bonita of Devils Lake, ND;
Eleven Grandchildren;
Nine Great Grandchildren;
Sister-In-Law: Ione Pierce of Kenmare, ND
Many Nieces, Nephews and their families also survive.
