Rose E. Barstad, 89 of Devils Lake passed away Saturday, February 16, 2008 at the Good Samaritan Center, Devils Lake.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, February 22, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. at peace Lutheran Church, Devils Lake with burial at the Devils Lake Cemetery. Rev. Rafe Allison will officiate.
Visitation will be held on Thursday from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with the family present from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Visitation on Friday will be at the church one hour prior to the funeral service.
Music will be provided by Colin Barstad, soloist and JoDee Lagein, pianist
Serving as Casket Bearer for Rose will be her grandsons, Todd Olson, Darrin Hawley, Scott Hawley, Cory Henke, Jay Hartl, Justen Barstad and Nicholas Barstad
Honorary Bearers will be Deborah Cole, Linda Merck, Kirk Olson, Cami Kasel, Cari Rankin, Alex Schnaderbeck, Erik Schnaderbeck, Nicole Barstad, Deshawn Tofsrud, Mark Gouldner, Sara Masoner and Jimmy Hager.
Rose E. Wilhelmi was born November 20, 1918 at Loma, ND, the daughter of Ralph and Catherine (Deck) Wilhelmi. She was reared and educated in Loma and Langdon, ND, graduating from Langdon High School. She was previously married to Ed Hager.
On December 18, 1971, Rose was united in marriage to Herby Barstad. They made their home in Webster, ND until Herby’s retirement. They then moved to Bemidji, MN where they lived on Lake Movil and enjoyed many years together growing beautiful flowers and fishing before returning to Devils Lake in 1990.
Rose worked at Carlson Bakery in Devils Lake for many years. She belonged to the Webster Homemakers Club, the Hope and Hoe Garden Club, the Good Neighbor Club and the Rebekahs. She was also a member of Peace Lutheran Church. Rose worked many years at the Bemidji Food Shelf with Herby and was a volunteer at the Devils Lake Senior Center.
Rose enjoyed doing cross stitch projects and working with ceramics. She was an outstanding cook who introduced German food to her Norwegian family.
Rose is survived by her daughters, Bonnie Hawley and Rita (Glenn) Olson, Devils Lake; step children, Cathy (Clayton) Henke, Colin (Judy) Barstad, all of Devils Lake, Dwight (Judy) Barstad, Colorado Springs, CO, Brenda (Rick) Schnaderbeck, Monte Vista, CO, Brent (Angie) Barstad, Prior Lake, MN; step daughter-in-law, Brenda Barstad also Devils Lake; Nineteen Grandchildren; Twenty-Six Great Grandchildren; One Great Great Grandchild; Sister: Delores (Howard) Armentrout, McAllen TX and many nieces and nephews and their families.
Rose was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Ed Hager and Herby Barstad; son, James Hager; step sons, Kim Barstad and Donn Barstad; brothers, Charlie, Victor, Rudy, Frances, Art and Jerome Wilhelmi; sisters, Alvina Wilhelmi, Elfrieda Devier, Eileen Dodgson and Tillie Casey.
