Omar Nicholas Berg

Omar N. Berg, 84 of Devils Lake formerly of Munich, ND died on Monday morning, July 21, 2008 at Heartland Care Center, Devils Lake. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 25, 2008 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Devils Lake with burial in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Devils Lake. Visitation will be held Thursday, July 24, 2008 at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake beginning at 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with a Scripture & Rosary service at 7:00 p.m. The Rosary will be led by the Knights of Columbus. Visitation on Friday will be at the church one hour prior to the funeral Mass. Memorials may be directed to your charity of choice. Serving as Casket Bearers for Omar will be his grandchildren: Chad Johnson, Gavin Johnson, Blake Biwer, Travis Heisler, Matthew Berg and Joshua Berg Reading the Scriptures: Penny Bossert Gift Bearers: Jenny Berg, Joleen Berg and Becky Biwer. Omar Nicholas Berg was born May 10, 1924 in Clyde, ND, son of Math and Catherine (Zimmer) Berg. He attended school and graduated Valedictorian from Clyde High School and also was the captain of the basketball team. Omar was united in marriage to Geraldine Bernardy on October 28, 1947 in Munich, ND They established their home in Calio, ND until they moved onto the family farm at Munich where they lived, farmed and raised their family through the years. They moved into Devils Lake in 1981 but Omar remained active in the farming operation. Geraldine passed away August 1, 1982. On July 26, 1986 Omar was united in marriage to Betty Michels at Devils Lake. They made their home in Devils Lake, relocating to Heartland Court in September of 2004 and in March of 2008, Omar moved to the Heartland Care Center. Omar was a skilled carpenter, especially cabinetry and was involved in many family building projects. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and travel tours, and the trip to Alaska was among his favorite. He was a former member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Munich and since moving into Devils Lake a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. He was a life member of the Knights of Columbus and also served on the Trier Township Board for many years. Omar is survived by his loving wife, Betty of nearly 22 years. Sons: Larry and his wif, Elaine of Spring Creek, NV; Donald and his wife, Pam of Worthington, MN; Daughter: Bonnie and her husband Keith Johnson of Grafton, ND. Daughter-In-Law: Debra Berg of Fargo, ND Step-daughters: Connie Heisler of Littleton, CO; Sandra and Doug Legge also of Littleton Grandchildren: Gavin (Bridget) Johnson, Chad (Tina) Johnson, Matthew (Rachael) Berg, Joleen Berg, Penny (Mike) Bossert, Amy (Brad Martens) Berg and Jenny Berg Great Grandchildren: Jayden and Finnegan Berg, Josh and Jessica Berg and Aeniesha Martens. Step Grandchildren, Travis (Karen) Heisler, Becky Biwer, Dawn Legge and Shawn Legge and step great grandchild, Blake Biwer. Sisters and Brothers: Emma Meagher, Milbrae, California; Ida Berg, Portland, Oregon; Lenore Huettl, Minot; Helen Brown, Spokane, Washington; Harold Berg, Devils Lake; Herman Berg, Bandon, Oregon and Richard Berg, also Devils Lake. Many nieces, nephews and their families also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents; sons, Marvin and Joseph Berg; grandson, Patrick Berg; step daughter, Sharon Anderson; step granddaughter, Jenny Heisler; brothers and sisters, George Berg, Hilda Michels, Mary Ann Nosbusch, Inez Berg and Margaret Berg.
