Mabel L. Steffan, 81 of Devils Lake, ND died on Monday, June 02, 2008 at Mercy Hospital, Devils Lake. Mass of Christian Burial for Mabel will be held on Saturday, June 7, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Devils Lake. Fr. Robert Pecotte will celebrate the Mass and burial will be in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Friday from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with a Rosary and Scripture Service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation on Saturday will be at the church one hour prior to the funeral Mass. Serving as Casket Bearers for Mabel will be Michael N. Steffan, Paul Steffan, Michael Steffan, Greg Schwab and John Alstad. Reading the scriptures will be Michelle Alstad and Beth Steffan Music will be provided by Patty Cote. Mabel Louise was born on March 25, 1927 at Garske, North Dakota the daughter of Andrew and Mary (Keck) Peterson. She was reared in the Garske/Chain Lakes area and attended school in Devils Lake. Mabel was united in marriage to Michael J. Steffan on April 9, 1947 in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Devils Lake. They established their home in Devils Lake where they lived, worked and raised their family through the years. Mabel and Mike worked side by side for many years as the owners and operators of the West Side Grocery, retiring in 1976. Michael died on April 23, 1995. Mabel continued to make her home in Devils Lake and for the past 3 years has been a resident of the Good Samaritan Center. Mabel was a devoted wife and mother. The store was open 365 days a year and Mabel, Mike and the family were there to serve the people of Devils Lake. She loved visiting with all their customers and after retiring, she enjoyed meeting new people and making new friends. Mabel loved the outdoors and animals. She had a special fondness for cats. She was also on of Gene Autry’s biggest fans. Mabel was a woman of faith and a woman who loved her family and was so proud of them all. She brought love and joy to her family and will be greatly missed. Mabel is survived by her children, Michael N. Steffan and his wife, Cheryl of St. Michael; Patricia Williams of Devils Lake; Paul J. Steffan of Germantown, Maryland. Grandchildren: Michelle (John) Alstad, Beth Steffan, Michael (Elizabeth) Steffan and David Steffan; Great Grandson: Michael J. Steffan Special Family Friend: Ronald Weed and his wife, Ellen of Nebraska Sister: Evelyn Gummeringer of Tacoma, Washington Many nieces, nephews and their families also survive. Mabel was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Michael; brother, Leonard Peterson; sisters, Della Smaage, Emma Tetrault and Edith Peterson in infancy and son-in-law, Jesse Williams.
