Eloise Verda Lewis was born on April 10, 1916 in Bruce Township, Cavalier County, rural Clyde, North Dakota to Jacob and Agnes (Rutledge) Lewis, the youngest of three children. The Lewis Family Farm was southwest of Clyde.
Eloise was united in marriage to Wilbur “Chub” Schrader on March 29, 1937 in Devils Lake, ND. They stayed in the Clyde area and Wilbur was the Clyde School Custodian until March of 1943 and then they moved to Pontiac, Michigan. While there they both worked at General Motors Truck and Coach, until Wilbur was called to active duty in Germany during World War II. Eloise went on working, building Army trucks. Eloise came back to Clyde in November of 1944 and lived in an apartment until Wilbur got home from the War.
They started farming in 1948 and in July of 1949 moved onto the Dawson Farm one mile south of Clyde. They were well known all over for their Polled Shorthorn Cattle which Eloise assisted her husband in showing at the annual Polled Shorthorn Shows. Due to Wilbur’s failing health they were forced to sell the cattle and Eloise learned to run a kidney dialysis machine and kept Wilbur going for seven years until his death in August of 1978.
Eloise continued living on the farm until 2007 when she moved to assisted living at Lake Country Manor in Devils Lake. In December of 2009, she was transferred to Maple Manor Care Center in Langdon due to a broken hip.
Eloise was a member of the Clyde Auxiliary and an active member of the Clyde Methodist Church where she sang in the choir and was Treasurer for thirty years. She loved her church and missed it very much when it was destroyed. Eloise also wrote the local news for the Towner County Record Herald in Cando for many years.
