Doris Alene Greenleaf, longtime Devils Lake resident, died in Sarasota, FL, on May 26.
Doris Greenleaf was born December 18, 1917 in Alexandria, Mn. After graduating from the University of Minnesota with a major in journalism, she worked as a reporter for the Park Region Echo in Alexandria and as women’s editor for the Worthington (Minn.) Daily Globe.
She married Harry K. Harrison in 1942 and moved to St. Paul. where
she did freelance reporting. He died in 1950. She married Willard A. Greenleaf July 21, l951, and moved to Devils Lake, N.D. She wrote special assignments for the Devils Lake Daily Journal and devoted many years doing volunteer public relations for the Devils Lake Public Schools, Lake Region State College and other organizations.
She served on the local library board in Devils Lake and the North Dakota Governor’s Advisory Council on Libraries. She held memberships in North Dakota Professional Communicators, a branch of the National Federation of Press Women; and the Society of Professional Journalists.
She was a member of the American Association of University Women.
She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Devils Lake, and associate member of First Presbyterian Church, Sarasota. In Devils Lake, she edited the church newsletter, taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, belonged to the church women’s organization, served three terms on the church Session, and preached the occasional sermon.
Survivors include her husband, Willard A. Greenleaf;
three daughters, Julie Magenheim, Sarasota; Elizabeth Gitter, Worthington, Ohio, and Jenny Greenleaf, Portland, Oregon, and eight grandchildren. A daughter, Susan Greenleaf, preceded her in death.
The memorial service will be Wednesday, May 31st at 2:00 pm at the First Presbyterian Church,
Sarasota, FL. The committal will be in Devils Lake at a later date
