Matthew John Kavanaugh, 87 of Chicago, IL, formerly of rural Crary, ND died Thursday, May 4, 2006 at the Zilber Family Hospice in Wauwatosa, WI.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday June 2, 2006 at 6:00 pm. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Devils Lake. Visitation and prayer service will be held before the service beginning at 4:30. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery with Military Honors accorded by the Neathery-Simensen Post #756, Devils Lake Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Matthew John Kavanaugh was born December 18, 1918 to Matthew and Mary Grace (Gallogly) in Devils Lake, ND. He graduated from Crary Public School, Crary, ND and from the University of North Dakota with a BS in Commerce in 1942 under the first wartime speedup commencement program. He attended U.S. Coast Guard Academy, New London, CT serving in World War II earning ribbons for the American Theatre and European Theatre (four stars). He attained the rank of Captain in the U.S Coast Guard Reserve before retiring in 1978. After World War II, he moved to Chicago, IL working in the banking industry and attended Northwestern University, Chicago, IL. In the 1960’s, he began working in the computer industry. He worked for Ampex, Memory Products Division; RCA Computer Systems; Sperry Univac Computer Systems all in the Chicago area calling on distribution, insurance, financial, manufacturing and health care industries selling computer systems. In retirement, he was in movies; television, radio and news print commercials. He was a member of the Screen Actors Guild, and the Veterans Hospital Radio. He was an avid golfer and sports enthusiast.
Matthew John is survived by his wife Jimmye Louise; daughter, Paulette and her husband Bill Schloetter, San Jose, CA; three grandchildren; brother, Thomas Kavanaugh and his wife Audrey Setter Kavanaugh, Milwaukee, WI.; sister, Irene Kavanaugh, Minot, ND; special niece, Suzanne Kavanaugh Dinusson and her husband John Dinusson, Rochester, MN; special great niece Dr. Jacquelyn Dinusson, Wauwatosa, WI; many other nieces, nephews; great nieces, great nephews; and great-great nieces and great-great nephews.
Matthew John was preceded in death by his parents, brothers: Edward, Patrick and James and sister, Mary Beth Kavanaugh.
