Nellie J. Sherratt

Nellie J. Sherratt, 107, of Devils Lake, ND formerly of Sarles, ND died on Friday evening, March 3, 2006 at Heartland Care Center, Devils Lake. Nellie’s life spanned three centuries and she was one of the oldest living North Dakotans. Funeral Services for Nellie will be held on Tuesday, March 7, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Devils Lake. Pastor Kevin Kaufman will officiate and burial will in the Sarles Cemetery in the spring. Nellie J. McGregor was born on December 18, 1898 in Kinloss (now Fairdale) Township, Walsh County, ND, the daughter of George and Ella Mae (Thompson) McGregor. She grew up in Fairdale, the oldest of seven siblings. In 1918, Nellie married Vern L. Sherratt in Langdon, ND. They established their first home in Milton, ND where their two children were born. In 1928, the family moved to Sarles, ND where they owned and operated a Hardware Store. Mr Sherratt died in 1952 and Nellie continued to operate the Hardware Store with her son, Vernon. Sarles was Nellie’s home for over fifty years and while there she was active in the Presbyterian Church and the I.O.O.F. Homemaker’s Club. She was well known for her fine baking, her welcoming home, her beautiful embroidery work and her remarkable letter writing habits with old friends and family. She moved from her home in Sarles in 1981 and lived in Devils Lake until her death. Nellie lived independently until the last few months of her life and this past summer was a great highlight for her when she to served as the Grand Marshall of the Fairdale Centennial and the Sarles Centennial. Nellie is survived by her daughter: Delores McLean of Mesa, Arizona Daughter-In-Law: Helen Williams of Alexandria, Minnesota Granddaughters: Sharon Brink and her husband, Charles of Stanton, California Connie Johnson and her husband, Charles of Rotunda, Florida Pat Hodgins and her husband, Gail of Hannah, ND Cindy McLean and her husband, Si of Boise, Idaho Pamela McLean and her husband Frederic of Santa Barbara, California Toni McLean of San Francisco, California Fourteen Great Grandchildren Nineteen Great Great Grandchildren Sisters: Wanda (Garry) Ruschman of Boise, Idaho Many Nieces, Nephews, Grand Nieces and Grand Nephews also survive. Nellie was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Vern; son, Vernon Sherratt; sisters, Nettie Hamre and Alma Christianson; brothers, Gordon McGregor, James McGregor and Henry McGregor; great grandson, Jeff Fahy and son-in-law, Percy McLean.
